BackgroundWomen having multiple sex partners are reportedly at an increased risk of HPV infection. However, the prevalence and risk factors of HPV infection in female sex workers (FSWs) vary considerably across racial/ethnic, socioeconomic, and geographic groups. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and risk factors of HPV infection in FSWs in Northeast China.MethodsA total of 309 FSWs identified and approached through a local police office and 1000 healthy subjects from a single factor undergoing annual gynecological examinations in Shenyang were recruited. A liquid-based ThinPrep Pap test and the Hybrid Capture II-based high-risk HPV DNA test, with or without a colposcopic examination, were performed on both FSWs and control subjects. Data on HPV infection and histological and cytological lesions of the cervix were obtained and analyzed. A questionnaire survey was administered to all 309 FSWs with their socio-demographic and behavioral information collected. The association of various socio-demographic and behavioral variables with HPV infection was assessed.ResultsHPV was significantly more prevalent in FSWs (61.90 %) than in healthy control subjects (21.00 %) (P < 0.01), so were cervical lesions (P < 0.01). HPV prevalence in our sample of FSWs fell in the upper range of reported values in FSWs across different countries, and was similar to that for FSWs in the southeast Chinese city of Huzhou but higher than that for FSWs in southwest China, Guangxi, as compared with data from other studies within China. HPV infection in FSWs was significantly associated with the age at first sexual intercourse (OR 0.699, 95 % CI 0.492–0.992) and post-menopause (OR 2.928, 95 % CI 1.099–7.800) (P < 0.05).ConclusionsFSWs are at a substantially high risk of HPV infection and cervical dysplasia development as compared with healthy control subjects in Shenyang, China. Age of first sexual intercourse and post-menopause are two independent risk factors for HPV infection in this special group of population. Intensified and coordinated efforts from government, public health sector, communities and families are needed to reduce the risk of HPV infection in this specific group of population.

RESUMO.A importância do tabagismo na oncogênese do colo uterino é conhecida, e a elevada concentração de derivados de tabaco como a nicotina tem sido associada à depressão das células de Langerhans (CL). A alta taxa de regressão da infecção por HPV e a evolução de alguns casos para malignização sugerem a existência de múltiplos fatores associados na imunodepressão. Objetivou-se estudar a influência do fumo nas alterações das CLs em mulheres com Captura Híbrida negativa. Foram estudadas 30 mulheres por meio do método clínico colposcópico. histopatológico, imuno-histoquímico, histométrico e teste de hibridização molecular. Dividiu-se a amostra em dois grupos: fumantes (n=8) e não-fumantes (n=22). Utilizou-se o teste não paramétrico de Wilcoxon (Ran sun test). As médias das densidade das CLs no epitélio foram de 232,41 células/mm 2 para fumantes e de 221,08 células/mm 2 para não-fumantes, sendo estes valores não significativos. Concluiu-se não haver diferença significativa na densidade dessas células entre fumantes e não-fumantes.Palavras-chave: células de Langerhans, colo uterino, tabaco, tabagismo, papilomavírus humano. Effects of smoking on the density of the uterine cervix Langerhans' cells.The role of smoking in the chemical carcinogenesis is well-known, and the high concentration of tobacco derivatives such as nicotine has been associated with the depression of the Langerhans'cells (LCs). The high regression rate of the human papilomavirus (HPV) infection and the evolution of some cases into malignancy suggest the existence of multiple associated factors in the neoplasic imunosurveillance . A study was undertaken on the effects of the smoking on the alterations of LCs in women with negative Hybrid Capture. Thirty women were studied through the clinical method, colposcopy, histopatology, immunohistochestry, histometry and hibridization assay. The sample was divided into two groups: smokers (n=8) and non-smokers (n=22). The nonparametric Wilcoxon rank-sum test was employed for statistical analysis. The averages of LCs densities in the epithelium were of 232.41 cells/mm 2 for smokers, and 221.08 cells/mm 2 for non smokers (p>0,05). Results did not show significant difference in LCs densities between smokers and non smokers.

Investigar a prevalência da infecção pelo Papilomavirus humano (HPV) em mulheres do município de Jacundá (PA) e fatores de risco para esta infecção. Estudo observacional, descritivo e analítico, do tipo transversal com coleta em prontuários de mulheres atendidas no Hospital Municipal e consultório particular de ginecologia, oriundos de Jacundá entre 2015 e 2016. Aplicou-se análise descritiva pelo programa Epi Info 3.5.1 e BioEstat 5.0. Dos 235 prontuários, 36,6% possuíam HPV e aquelas com 45 anos ou mais possuíam maior prevalência desta infecção (40,3%). Quanto à citologia, 28,9% possuíam alguma alteração. E somente as variáveis escolaridade, etilismo e citologia alterada possuíam associação significante, exclusivamente para as de 26 a 44 anos, sendo variáveis consideradas como fatores de risco para aquisição e manutenção viral. Assim, houve alta prevalência de HPV na região (45 anos ou mais) com fatores de risco relacionados à escolaridade, ao etilismo e às alterações na citologia cervical, na faixa etária de 26 a 44 anos.
