SmartX Box: Virtualized Hyper-Converged Resources for Building an Affordable Playground

Abstract: In this paper, we present our proposals and efforts for building an affordable playground (i.e., miniaturized testbed) for Software-Defined Networking (SDN)-Cloud experiments by using hyper-converged SmartX Boxes that are distributed across multiple sites. Each SmartX Box consists of several virtualized functions that are categorized into SDN and cloud functions. Multiple SmartX Boxes are deployed and inter-connected through SDN to build multi-site distributed cloud playground resources. The resulting deployme… Show more

“…We conducted experimental evaluations over the OF@TEIN Playground [26] where we verified the end-to-end integration of proposed solutions, demonstrating how packet tracing results were analyzed at the visibility center and translated into ONOS intents for networking control. Performance measurements presented in this section include assessing the efficiency of IO Visor-based packet tracing, the clustering efficiency of our flowcentric visibility solution, and the execution time of our ONOS intent-based networking application, showcasing the scalability and effectiveness of our proposals.…”

“…Cloud computing [17], [18] is one such big paradigm that gained traction in the mid-2000s with the introduction of the Amazon Web Services (AWS). It has since picked the interest of both service providers and consumers, owing to its pay-per-use service model, which eliminates the upfront cost of purchasing physical hardware while also masking network connectivity complexity among other factors that make applications hosted on these systems more resilient and easily managed.…”

“…Reference [10] presents an SDN-based quality of experience (QoE) control scheme for dynamic adaptive streaming over HTTP/3 (DASH), using the quick UDP internet connection (QUIC) [4] for mobile devices and users. Reference [11] discusses the testbed experimentations of SDN using SmartX boxes that are distributed across multiple sites. Each SmartX box consists of several virtualized functions that are categorized into SDN and cloud functions.…”
