Smartphone-Based Visual Acuity Measurement for Screening and Clinical Assessment

Abstract: IMPORTANCE Visual acuity is the most frequently performed measure of visual function in clinical practice and most people worldwide living with visual impairment are living in low- and middle-income countries. OBJECTIVE To design and validate a smartphone-based visual acuity test that is not dependent on familiarity with symbols or letters commonly used in the English language. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS Validation study conducted from December 11, 2013, to March 4, 2014, comparing results from smar… Show more

“…In view of the above, educational interventions mediated by light technologies such as the booklet for ocular self-examination can promote positive screening behaviors and is a viable strategy that must be incorporated into nursing care in any care setting. Thus, screenings using Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) represent a strategy that tends to radically change the panorama of late detection of visual impairments (9) . Therefore, it is essential that materials address guidelines on eye health at accessible reading levels, both in the printed and the online versions (4) .…”

“…It is useful for identifying ocular problems in several situations, not only clinical but also traumatic (27) . A study recently developed in India reached the conclusion on the possibility of promoting behavior changes when these include simple information and without involvement of complex procedures or those interfering with cultural beliefs (28) . Therefore, the need for information on ocular health justifies the efforts for greater possibility of access to knowledge about ocular self-care promotion.…”

“…Visual acuity (VA) is the most commonly performed measure of visual function globally 1. Clinically, VA assessment is important to quantify changes in vision over time and is a good predictor of the presence of refractive error 2.…”

“…Clinically, VA assessment is important to quantify changes in vision over time and is a good predictor of the presence of refractive error 2. Additionally, in research settings, VA is a critical measure to assess the efficacy of therapies in clinical trials and to quantify the burden of vision impairment and blindness in population-based studies 1…”
