The modern hydraulic fracturing technique was implemented in the oil and gas industry in the 1940s. Since then, it has been used extensively as a method of stimulation in unconventional reservoirs in order to enhance hydrocarbon recovery. Advances in directional drilling technology in shale reservoirs allowed hydraulic fracturing to become an extensively common practice worldwide. Fracturing technology can be classified according to the type of the fracturing fluid with respect to the well orientation into vertical, inclined, or horizontal well fracturing. Depth, natural fractures, well completion technology, capacity, and formation sensitivity of a shale reservoir all play a role in the selection of fracturing fluid and fracturing orientation. At present, the most commonly used technologies are multi-section fracturing, hydra-jet fracturing, fracture network fracturing, re-fracturing, simultaneous fracturing, and CO 2 and N 2 fracturing. This chapter briefly reviews the technologies used in shale reservoir fracturing.

Smart materials, especially environmentally responsive materials are the basis of many applications, and have attracted much more attentions. In recent years, application research of smart materials in the oil and gas industry has begun. Through principle/performance analysis, application environment comparison, and demand analysis, the application potential and application advantages of self-healing concrete, vibration energy-generating rubber and 4D intelligent structural materials in the downhole operations were evaluated. The application status of smart materials in petroleum engineering is introduced. At the same time, combined with the actual domestic engineering requirements, the long-term effect of improving underground plugging, the shale inhibition of drilling fluid, the downhole control and the efficiency of drilling operations are all proposed. For the application prospects, it is recommended to keep track of the research progress of environmentally responsive materials and carry out pre-research work on the application of advanced smart materials in the field of downhole operations.

Lost circulation has been a serious problem while drilling that may lead to heavy financial costs in the form of lost rig time and lost mud fluid. In severe cases, it can lead to well blowout with serious environmental hazards and safety consequences. Despite extensive advances in the last couple of decades, lost circulation materials used today still have disadvantages such as damaging production zones, failing to seal large fractures or plugging drilling tools. Here, we propose a new class of smart expandable lost circulation material (LCM) to remotely control the expanding force and functionality of the injected LCM. Our smart LCM is made out of shape memory polymers that become activated by formation's natural heat. Once activated, these particles can effectively seal fractures' width without damaging pores in the production zone or plugging drilling tools. The activation temperature of the proposed LCM can be adjusted based on the formation's temperature. We conducted a series of experiments to measure the sealing efficiency of these smart LCMs as a proof of concept study. Various slot disk sizes were used to mimic different size fractures in the formation. The API RP 13B-1 and 13B-2 have been followed as standard testing methods to evaluate this product.
