Small-Scale Environmental Drivers of Plant Community Structure and Diversity in Neotropical Montane Cloud Forests Harboring Threatened Magnolia dealbata in Southern Mexico

Abstract: Gradient analysis was used to determine factors driving small-scale variation of cloud forest communities harboring Magnolia dealbata, a threatened species and bioculturally relevant tree for the Chinantecan, Mazatecan, Nahuan, and Zapotecan ethnicities in southern Mexico. Particularly, we aimed to: (a) determine factors explaining major community gradients at different heterogeneity scales along a small-scale elevational gradient, (b) test the Decreasing and the Continuum hypotheses along elevation, and (c) c… Show more

“…The thickness of the O horizon increased, whereas soil pH and N/P ratio decreased toward older stands in a tropical montane cloud forest area (Bautista-Cruz and del Castillo, 2005). Soil pH was found to explain species discontinuities of cloud forest species in Sierra Norte, Oaxaca (Domínguez-Yescas et al, 2020). Soil properties depend on the surface lithology, which in SMP is among the world's most complex (Marshall, 2007).…”

“…However, in MCFs studies at this scale have received less attention with respect to larger macroscale explorations ( e.g . elevation gradients revised in Looby & Martin (2020) ), hampering the robust view of ecosystem functioning as small-scale processes may be masked by larger scale features ( Domínguez-Yescas et al, 2020 ; Krashevska, Maraun & Scheu, 2010 ; Stoyan et al, 2000 ).…”

“…Each criteria weighed between 0 to 1 except for SuppReg, which ranged between 0 to 1.5 but was scaled down to 0 to 1 for the analysis (see Table 4 ). R software was used to develop a non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) model [ 15 , 16 ] to form the typology.…”
