Small Island Spatial Accessibility: The Case of San Vicente, Northern Samar, Philippines

Abstract: The spatial accessibility serves as a lifeline that sustains the existence and survival of small island communities with limited resources. Yet, there is a lack of studies that focus on transport availability and characteristics as measures of small island spatial accessibility. A Small Island Spatial Accessibility Index (SISAI) was created to determine the spatial accessibility of San Vicente, Northern Samar, an archipelagic municipality consisting of seven small islands. The indicators used include distance … Show more

“…This article discusses the relationship between maritime transportation and spatial accessibility. Spatial accessibility problems for islands related to transportation can be measured using indicators such as distance (km), availability of public vehicles, round-trip travel time in a day (available/unavailable), the number of vehicles making trips per week, the number of trips per week, the total passenger capacity of vehicles per week, and transportation connectivity (Hilvano et al, 2022). Despite the beauty of Mapur Island's coastal and underwater scenery, transportation to the island is limited.…”
