Small Dense Low-density Lipoprotein Cholesterol is a Useful Marker of Metabolic Syndrome in Patients with Coronary Artery Disease

Abstract: Aim: An evaluation of the relation between small dense low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (sd-LDL-C) levels measured by the heparin-magnesium precipitation method and metabolic syndrome (MetS).

“…The atherogenic dyslipidemia pattern, accepted to be due to insulin resistance in patients with MetS, is characterized by high triglyceride, low HDL-C, and increased sd-LDL particle levels 2) . Although LDL-C levels in patients with MetS were not found to be higher than in the general population, qualitative LDL-C abnormalities, such as sd-LDL, are commonly observed in these patient groups, with reports that LDL particle measurement may be a useful tool to identify candidates for intensive lipid-lowering treatment 17,18) . It has been stated that the therapeutic modulation of LDL size and subgroups would provide significant benefits in the risk reduction of cardiovascular events 13) .…”

“…A previous study based on gradient gel electrophoresis demonstrated subjects with metabolic syndrome to have small, dense LDL 22,25) . In a recent cross-sectional study, the number of small, dense LDL particles determined by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy was found to be greater in patients with metabolic syndrome and to increase with the number of components of metabolic syndrome 26) .…”

“…In the present study, the highest and lowest levels of sd-LDL-C at baseline were 95 mg/dL and 24 mg/dL, revealing the variability of sd-LDL-C levels in FH. We previously reported that sd-LDL-C determined by this method was a useful marker of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in patients with CAD 30) . In this report, mean levels of sd-LDL-C with MetS were 26.4 2.6 mg/dL.…”
