Small cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix

Abstract: From 1962 to 1985, 2201 patients with invasive cervical cancer were staged, evaluated, and treated at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. After a thorough evaluation, 25 cases (1.1%) fulfilled the histologic criteria for small cell cancer defined by Reagan and coworkers. These patients were computer-matched for age, disease stage, and lesion size to 25 patients with large cell nonkeratinizing cancer and 25 patients with keratinizing squamous cell cancer. Morphometric analyses of nuclear size and maximum… Show more

“…Small cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix is an aggressive tumor with early spread to the entire body, thereby leading to a fatal clinical course and minimal chance of survival [1][2][3][4]. Because of the distinct natural history of small cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix and because patients with this condition are considered to have a systemic disease, the treatment strategies for this disease are different from those of other carcinomas [4,5].…”

“…Accordingly, some patients may be inadequately treated because they are initially considered to have non-small cell carcinoma on the basis of Papanicolaou's smear result alone [4][5][6]. Therefore, the suggestion of small cell carcinoma on imaging studies is important for adequate patient treatment.…”

“…[1][2][3][4][5] Small-cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix is a very rare tumor, accounting for about 1% of all cervical carcinomas. 4,6 On cytodiagnosis of small-cell carcinoma, small round cells with a high N/C ratio, or lacking cytoplasm, are found to form dense clusters that are observed to be scattered on a necrotic background. Although it may be difficult to distinguish small-cell carcinoma of the cervix from squamouscell carcinoma of the small-cell nonkeratinizing type, the former tumor shows weaker cell linkage than the latter.…”

“…The clone that showed the most stable growth was used for the current study. Influence of dB-cAMP on cell proliferation of TC-YIK Adenosine dB-cAMP (Sigma, St. Louis, MO) was dissolved in distilled water at a concentration of 100 mM, 5 To whom requests for reprints should be addressed. …”

“…[1][2][3][4][5][6][7] Because ASCC is a rare cervical tumor, accounting for only 1.5 to 5% of all cervical tumors, [1][2][3][4][5][6][7] most reports on ASCC have been concerned with one or a few cases. Therefore, development of in vivo and in vitro experimental systems is desirable not only for examining the biological behavior of ASCC, but also for establishing an effective clinical treatment.…”
