Sliding Mode Pulse Width Modulation

Abstract: This paper presents sliding mode pulse width modulation (SMPWM) control methodologies for a currentcontrolled inverter. Discussion begins with circuit analysis, proper references, and design of sliding surfaces. Based on this formulation, two novel approaches adopt sliding mode concept are proposed to make the system tracking selected references. Three-phase currents and the neutral point voltage are controlled simultaneously. Optimization of different operational criteria is offered by SMPWM via the control o… Show more

“…PWM methods for three-phase Voltage Source Inverters (VSIs) can be divided into two categories, the methods for the output current control which are mostly closed loop methods and the schemes for output voltage control whose switching action does not depend on output voltage feedback information and are open loop methods [1], [2]. Closed loop methods such as Sliding Mode based PWM for current control [2], hysteresis and predictive current control [3]. Open loop methods such as sinusoidal and Space Vector PWM methods [4].…”

“…Hence it is reasonable to employ SMC concept, resulting in a discontinuous control law, as an effective replacement for the conventional PWM techniques for the voltage or current control of power converters [5], [6]. In [2] a sliding mode based PWM method is proposed for the current control of a VSI in a closed loop manner. In the proposed method, the average voltage of the neutral point of a star connected load is also controlled as an extra degree of freedom.…”

“…On the other hand, the sliding mode (SM) control technique has gained more interest for both non-linear and linear loads [14]- [16]. The SM control technique is widely recognised as the algorithm of choice for implementing an inverter system because of its outstanding performance.…”
