Sleep patterns afted graded exercise

Abstract: The effects of six graded and measured exercise activities on sleep patterns were investigated in two healthy young men. Electrophysiological recording were made continuously throughout the night to distinguish sleep states. This experiment was designed to test the hypothesis of a relation between physical activity and slow-wave sleep (SWS: stages 3 and 4 of non-REM sleep). A progressive increase in SWS over the whole-night sleep record was found with progressively increasing physical fatigue. A fall in rapid-… Show more

“…There was a large amount of slow-wave sleep for the ®rst 150 min after falling asleep. The increase in internal body temperature that occurs during daytime aects sleep, as demonstrated when appropriate exercise raises body temperature (Shapiro et al 1975;Walker et al 1978). However, there is no such data for elderly people.…”

“…For example, the study by Shapiro et al (1975) imposed an exercise load of two to three times the moderately heavy load administered by Horne and Porter (1976). Other findings of increases in SWS and/or sleep-hGH release when the body is pushed to physiological limits come from starvation of nonobese subjects (MacFayden, Oswald, & Lewis, 1973;Parker, Rossman, & Vanderhaan, 1972) and heat stress (Putkonen, Eloman, & Kotilanen, 1973).…”
