Sleep Apnea in Epistaxis Patients Treated with Nasal Packs

Abstract: The presence of anterior and posterior nasal packs in patients with epistaxis is known to be associated with cardiorespiratory problems and sometimes death, although the mechanism has not been well understood. To determine the incidence and severity of obstructive sleep apnea in patients with epistaxis treated with both anterior and posterior nasal packs, we obtained polysomnograms on twelve patients while the packs were in place. Ten of these patients demonstrated obstructive sleep apnea. The apnea index (apn… Show more

“…Nasal occlusion in normal subjects leads to increased numbers of apnoeic episodes, sleep arousals, and awakenings [63][64][65], and increased numbers of apnoeas and hypopnoeas are also seen in patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis when symptomatic [66], or with a deviated nasal septum [67]. Nasal packing for epistaxis may induce OSA or exacerbate pre-existing OSA [68], whilst topical anaesthesia of the nose significantly increases the number of disordered breathing events in normal sleeping subjects [69,70].…”
