Skull base CT: normative values for size and symmetry of the facial nerve canal, foramen ovale, pterygoid canal, and foramen rotundum

Abstract: Relative asymmetry is more important than absolute size for determining nerve canal/foramen abnormality. These normative data may be useful adjuncts to subjective assessments of nerve canal/foramen size when using skull base CT to identify tumor.

“…We started the project by first creating a CT image database of infrazygomatic needle insertion to FR in human skull specimen. The average diameter of the FR in adults is 3.0 ± 0.4 mm, smaller than the FO (4.6 ± 0.9 mm) [34]. Currently, there are few available fluoroscopy and/or CT images of infrazygomatic needle access of FR in human.…”

“…The superior part of the Dorsum sellae may be a separate bone or it may be joined to the petrous portion of the temporal bone. The foramen rotundum may be double or absent (0.64%) of 157 skulls. The usual diameter of the optic canal is 5.5mm but varies from 3.5 to 6.5mm,The foramen spinosum and ovale may be continuous (Sepahdari and mong, 2013). A very rare variation of foramen rotundum in which it opens into the orbit along with a branching canal connecting middle cranial fossa with orbit.…”

“…The average width of FC in adulthood ranges from 1.11 to 1.39 mm [ 24 ]. Comparing our results to the literature data, the average values for both portions of fetal FC were similar.…”
