Skin Protection in the Food Industry

Abstract: In food occupations, like in many other skin risk occupations, the regular use of personal protection equipment, i.e. of skin protection ointments and protective gloves, is recommended as well as regular skin care for the prevention of occupational hand dermatitis. We investigated the uptake and maintenance of different prevention strategies (instructions for skin protection and skin care, prevocational skin hardening with UV light) in food occupations and their efficacy in the primary prevention of vocational… Show more

A hardening effect after repeated exposure to noxious stimuli is described for contact dermatitis (e.g., chromate allergy in masons) [reviewed in 36], UV irradiation [1,2], but also for xray irradiation [31,34]. Hardening occurs after chronic irritation of the skin because epidermal hyperproliferation leads in particular to thickening of the stratum corneum.…”

“…Therefore, the continuous use of personal protective equipment, such as gloves and protective moisturisers, is highly recommended for the prevention of occupational contact dermatitis. The effectiveness of different prevention strategies (training in skin protection and care, as well as prevocational skin hardening with UV light) in prevention of hand dermatitis of food industry workers was investigated . Statistically significant differences were found in TEWL baseline values between an intervention and control group, which was an indication of the effectiveness of skin protection and skin care in maintaining optimal skin condition in food industry trainees.…”
