Skin color independent assessment of aging using skin autofluorescence

Abstract: Skin autofluorescence (AF) for the non-invasive assessment of the amount of accumulated tissue Advanced Glycation Endproducts (AGEs) increases with aging. In subjects with darker skin colors, measurements typically result in lower AF values than in subjects with fair skin colors, e.g. due to selective absorption by skin compounds. Our aim was to provide a new method for calculating skin AF, yielding values that are independent of skin color. The deviation of skin AF of healthy subjects with various darker skin… Show more

“…A method to adapt the estimation of skin AF in healthy subjects for the influence of skin color is described in Koetsier et al [15] This approach is based on empirical optimization, using a sample population of non-diabetic subjects, of a set of correction parameters that are calculated from spectra in the UV-A and visible range. here, image data from additional spectral bands in the visible range could be added to the algorithm.…”

“…Skin AF cannot currently be assessed in people with dark skin, which represents a significant number of patients with CKD, particularly in the United States. A method has been proposed for calculating skin AF independent of skin color, and it may be an important area of investigation for future research (44). This study was an observational study, and we are cautious in ascribing any causal relationship to these results.…”

“…Erősebben pigmentált bőrű betegcsoportban a SAF értékei alacsonyabbak, kevésbé jelzik a diabeteses szövődményeket [34]. A bőrautofl uoreszcencia-mérés céljából kifejlesztett eszköz 2010-től alkalmas a bőr pigmenttartalomtól független meghatározására is egy algoritmus segítségével, így sötét (Fitzpatrik V-VI) bőrszínű páciensek esetében is alkalmazható [35].…”
