Skill acquisition of safe medication administration through realistic simulation: an integrative review

Abstract: Objective: to investigate evidence that indicates the contribution of realistic high, medium or low fidelity simulation to acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes in safe medication administration by nursing students. Methods: an integrative review of experimental studies from MEDLINE, LILACS, Web of Science, Scopus and Science Direct. The descriptors “nursing students”, “simulation”, “high fidelity simulation training”, “medication errors” and “pharmacology” were used to identify 14 studies that answered the… Show more

“…Our study shows that very positive results were obtained from using simulation as a means of teaching professional skills such as the safe administration of nursing medication, a finding that corroborates previous research in this field [ 18 , 26 30 , 43 ]. In general, better results were obtained for the six rights during the simulation than in the prior questionnaire.…”

“…For undergraduate nursing students to be efficient in the performance of the procedure, they must build skills throughout their studies ( 14 , 16 ) . The construction of skills requires the combination of theoretical, practical, and attitudinal knowledge, simultaneously ( 17 ) . Provided with prior experience, undergraduate nursing students’ fear of the procedure is reverted into knowledge and subsequently into safety in future experiences ( 18 ) .…”

“…They can learn and practice procedures such as suturing ( 18 ), phlebotomy ( 19 , 20 ), or catheter insertion ( 21 ) on high-fidelity manikins or virtual reality simulators. This early exposure helps students gain proficiency and confidence in performing these skills ( 22 , 23 ).…”
