Geological visualisation while working in the field often requires expensive specialised equipment that is conventionally hard to master. Knowledge and prior experience of the specific techniques and formats used by the different devices is required to create data. This paper presents a new method that applies Augmented Reality (AR) with generic smart phones and tablets to view existing geological data sets. AR is an emerging technology that is a synthesised hybrid between the virtual world and the real world. Here, this method negates the need to understand mapping techniques when referencing threedimensional (3D) models to the above ground terrain. Geologists can explore subterranean phenomenon with datasets visually laid accurately over the environment so the need to reference diagrams and maps to the physical world while in the field is no longer necessary. Geologists can see data as though it were part of the environment, analogous to giving them x-ray vision in the field. We present a prototype that can be applied in fields of education or as device to assist the mining industry to enhance understanding of subterranean geological structures. For example, volcanic structures, faults and fractures can be seen as they would appear from the surface or mine data such as tunnels, ventilation, ore bodies and rock types. AR techniques used for geological visualisation in the field is a new application area with potential for wider commercial applications.

RESUMENLa reciente implantación de las tecnologías portátiles digitales en la sociedad, y especialmente entre los jóvenes, supone un desafío para los docentes, y podría ser una oportunidad para obtener un mayor aprovechamiento acadé-mico. Este artículo presenta una investigación sobre el uso educativo de aplicaciones de Geolocalización y Realidad Aumentada con dispositivos digitales móviles en niveles de Enseñanza Secundaria, Bachillerato y Formación Profesional. Se trata de una investigación para averiguar si es posible emplear estos recursos en los dispositivos móviles del alumnado para obtener un beneficio y mejora educativa. El trabajo se inicia con una revisión de estos desarrollos tecnológicos desde una dimensión formativa. A continuación se realiza un macro estudio descriptivo y cuantitativo entre 1832 alumnos en el que analizamos el tipo de dispositivos que poseen; para posteriormente analizar la opinión del profesorado sobre la funcionalidad y utilidad didáctica de estos desarrollos. Los resultados clarifican la tipología y penetración de los dispositivos entre los tres niveles educativos analizados, y los datos apuntan la posibilidad de implementar estas tecnologías ya que sus equipos disponen de sistemas operativos avanzados y hardware GPS apropiado. Interaction techniques for handheld mobile Augmented Reality (AR) often focus on device-centric methods based around touch input. However, users may not be able to easily interact with virtual objects in mobile AR scenes if they are holding the handheld device with one hand and touching the screen with the other, while at the same time trying to maintain visual tracking of an AR marker. In this paper we explore novel interaction methods for handheld mobile AR that overcomes this problem. We investigate two different approaches; (1) freeze view touch and (2) finger gesture based interaction. We describe how each method is implemented and present findings from a user experiment comparing virtual object manipulation with these techniques to more traditional touch methods.
