Skeptical Theism, Abductive Atheology, and Theory Versioning*

Abstract: What we call "the evidential argument from evil" is not one argument but a family of them, originating (perhaps) in the 1979 formulation of William Rowe. Wykstra's early versions of skeptical theism emerged in response to Rowe's evidential arguments. But what sufficed as a response to Rowe may not suffice against later more sophisticated versions of the problem of evil-in particular, those along the lines pioneered by Paul Draper. Our chief aim here is to make an earlier version of skeptical theism more respon… Show more

“…As there are a variety of arguments from evil (see Draper (2009) for a good overview), different skeptical theists propose different kinds of epistemological principles and different claims about our access to God's permission of evil, custom tailoring their responses to the argument at hand. (For more on skeptical theism in general, see Perrine and Wykstra (2014) or Perrine (2019: 118-121). )…”

“…For even if one does not find my case convincing in (2018a) that the scope of skeptical theism is not narrow despite it being restricted to arguments from evil that rely on a noseeum inference, this is not a strike against skeptical theism as I have construed it, for it never claimed to apply to arguments that do not rely on such an inference. 13 For a recent discussion of the principle, see Kenneth Boyce (2014), Paul Draper (2014), and Timothy Perrine and Stephen Wykstra (2014), all contained in Trent Dougherty and Justin McBrayer (2014), and see also McBrayer (2009) Tooley (1991) and Matthew A.
