“…When characterised by xerostomia and keratoconjunctivitis sicca it is classified as primary Sjög-ren©s syndrome but when associated with a connective tissue disorder or other autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, primary bililary cirrhosis or scleroderma, it is classified as secondary Sjögren©s syndrome. These conditions are associated with lymphocyte infiltration of the salivary glands and reduced salivary flow rate [1±5] and are also associated with the presence of specific autoantibodies in saliva, which include antibody to ductal epithelial cells [6,7], antibodies to nucleoprotein antigens, anti-SS-A(Ro) and anti-SS-B(La) [8±10], antinuclear antibody [11], and rheumatoid factors of the three major immunoglublin classes including slgA [11±13].
