Sizing optimization for island microgrid with pumped storage system considering demand response

Abstract: Currently, small islands are facing an energy supply shortage, which has led to considerable concern. Establishing an island microgrid is a relatively good solution to the problem. However, high investment costs restrict its application. In this paper, micro pumped storage (MPS) is used as an energy storage system (ESS) for islands with good geographical conditions, and deferrable appliance is treated as the virtual power source which can be used in the planning and operational processes. Household acceptance … Show more

“…The energy stored in a building depends on the thermal performance of the wall and the heating and ventilation system. The use of building structure for thermal storage is a key energy storage technology as it can improve the penetration of renewable energy and reduce the produc-tion and distribution problems [29]. In [28], the power shifting of energy storage is analyzed which has a great load transfer potential in cold weather due to the high heat demand and varying operational time.…”

“…[18] for its separated local and global iterative process which guarantees convergence accuracy. Mixed Integer Linear Programming is another popular technique -it involves the use of some linearisation approach to convert the nonlinear models into linear models [11], [12], [19]. Particle swarm optimisation, a heuristic approach, has also been proposed in the literature [19], [20].…”

“…It is presumed in [17] that the aggregator sells electricity to consumers at a predefined retail rate. A microgrid optimization model is proposed in [18,19], which directly assumes the deferrable and interruptible loads as sources of DR but ignores consumer behavior. Demand side flexibility is studied in [20] using a DG planning model combined with a unit commitment and economic dispatch model, but the demand side flexibility is investigated via four enumerated possible cases, which simplified the DR situation and neglected the interaction between the DSO and consumers.…”
