Herein, optimal groundwater pumping solutions based on a variety of energy resources and water storage options are estimated and classified. Each energy source and water storage option is first characterized considering energy, economic, and environmental criteria. A multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) process based on the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and the technique for order performance by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) is subsequently applied to identify and classify the optimal groundwater pumping solutions under such a multidimensional framework. An aquifer located in the southeast of Spain is analyzed in a case study to assess the proposed optimal MCDM-based approach. Conventional diesel-based equipment, solar PV power plants, and direct grid connection, as well as three water storage systems-direct pumping, seasonal storage, and annual storage-are identified as potential energy sources and water storage options, respectively. Characterization and visualization of these energy and water storage systems, as well as prioritized option results, are also discussed herein.

A detailed developed model for the average radiation calculated by using instantaneous values is introduced. The proposed model can be used to calculate the photovoltaic pumping system performance such as water flow rate, water head, total output power and system efficiency at a given time. An experimental system is established in Egypt Delta region located at latitude of 30.5° north and longitude of 30.3° east. The effect of cell temperature variation is studied. All meteorological data and actual measurements are collected instantaneously and stored. A comparison study between experimental and simulation results is given. Also the average water discharge predicted has been compared with the experimental values. It is found that the difference between the simulation results and the experimental is less than 5% this ensures that the proposed system is designed in high accuracy.

Summary In this article, an optimal design model using metaheuristic techniques to overcome such difficult optimization problems has been proposed. For this purpose, various well‐known metaheuristic algorithms have been used, namely: ant lion optimizer (ALO), bat algorithm (BA), cuckoo search algorithm (CSA), and gray wolf optimization algorithm (GWO). To provide optimal system configurations, an objective function based on the total net present cost (TNPC) has been specified while taking into account a number of constraints, including the loss of power supply probability (LPSP). The effectiveness of the used algorithms in solving such problem is assessed and their performances compared with each other. To assess the suggested model's effectiveness, a case study has been conducted to investigate a stand‐alone photovoltaic water pumping system (PVWPS), designed to supply water to a one‐hectare field of date palm trees. This field of an oasis located in the Ghardaïa region of Algeria consists of 130 date palm trees spaced 9 m apart. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the GWO algorithm over the other algorithms. GWO converges toward the optimal solutions for different heads and all reliability levels required by the customer. Another aspect, supported by the developed methodology, is the accounting of the excess water volume. It has been found that the relative surplus is inversely proportional to the PVWPS reliability level. For a head of 30 m, the relative excess is estimated at 120% for LPS0%, while it is 27% for LPSP of 10%. The same observations are made for the other heads.
