Size spectra, biomass, and trophic groups of free‐living marine nematodes along a water‐depth gradient in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico

Abstract: Free-living Nematoda is one of the most important metazoan groups in the marine realm due to its abundance, diversity, and biomass. Nematodes are broadly distributed from littoral to deep-sea environments (Lambshead, 2004;Ramalho et al., 2014;Sharma, Baguley, Bluhm, & Rowe, 2011) and influence the energy transfer, organic matter remineralization, and bioturbation of the sea bed (Giere, 2009). In marine food webs, nematodes are extremely important because they provide a critical food source for macrofauna and j… Show more

“…The five newly identified species presented were all derived from sediment samples in water depths of less than 2 m. Previous investigations have demonstrated the absence of NTF beyond a water depth of 4 m [13]. However, abundant aquatic nematodes still exist in deeper waters [43,44]. At such depths, there must be other nematode regulators to perform the function of aquatic nematode population regulation instead of NTF.…”
