Size-dependent density of zirconia nanoparticles

Abstract: SummaryThe correlation between density and specific surface area of ZrO2 nanoparticles (NPs) was studied. The NPs were produced using a hydrothermal process involving microwave heating. The material was annealed at 1100 °C which resulted in an increase in the average grain size of the ZrO2 NPs from 11 to 78 nm and a decrease in the specific surface area from 97 to 15 m2/g. At the same time, the density increased from 5.22 g/m3 to 5.87 g/m3. This effect was interpreted to be the result of the presence of a hydr… Show more

“…This is caused by the lower atomic weight of Co 2+ (≈58.69 u) in comparison with the substituted Zn 2+ ions (≈65.38 u) and the presence of defects in the crystalline lattice as a result of the presence of dopant ions. The observed correlation between the density and size of NPs is well-known and described in the literature, e.g., for ZnO [60,61], HAp [65,83], and ZrO 2 [84]. The average size of Zn 0.9 Co 0.1 O NPs determined from TEM changed from 23 nm to 52 nm with the increase in the H 2 O content in the precursor from 1.5 to 5% (Table 4, Figure 7).…”

“…These results were similar to those described in the literature [17,22,46]. According to the literature, the GIC properties could be optimized by modifying the particle size and the glassionomer composition and that the addition of particles (>5 μm) considerably improved its mechanical properties [21,46,47]. After grinding and sieving the ZrO 2 powders using different sieves, their particle size distribution did not show significant differences, corroborating previous results [16,17].…”

“…At this laboratory, the microwave reactors produce iron oxides with a grain size of 20 nm, zirconium dioxide ca. 10 nm [67], zirconium dioxidedoped Eu, Nd, Gd, or Tb [67][68][69], and Ca 5 (PO 4 ) 3 OH, GoHAP with an average grain diameter of 8-40 nm controlled by the time and temperature of reaction [65,66]. In IHPP PAS, it is possible to obtain six types of GoHAP with a narrow size distribution and different characteristics of nanostructures ( Figure 10).…”
