Size and stability of liposomes: A possible role of hydration and osmotic forces

Abstract: Dynamic light scattering and electrophoretic mobility measurements have been used to characterize the size, size distribution and zeta potentials (zeta-potentials) of egg yolk phosphatidylcholine (EYPC) liposomes in the presence of monovalent ions ( Na(+) and K(+)). To study the stability of liposomes the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory has been extended by introducing the hydrated radius of the adsorbed ions onto the liposome surfaces. The decrease of liposome size is explained on the basis of … Show more

“…The mean±SD of vesicle diameter determined at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months was 720±30, 750±40, 640±40, and 400±40 nm, respectively (Table I). Vesicle shrinkage has been attributed to water evacuation until maximum compaction of vesicles with possible implication of difference in osmotic forces on both sides of the bilayer (48). In the present study, movement of VCM from the bilayer to the outer niosome surface during storage possibly created an osmotic force without affecting the EE equilibrium.…”

“…Colloidal stability of liposomes systems can be explained by the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory, which describes that the stability of the colloidal systems is determined by the net effect of repulsive electrical double layer and the attractive van der Waals forces that the particles experience as they contact one another (Sabín et al, 2006). Factors like adsorption of proteins and neutralization of surface charges promote van der Waal's associative forces and reduce the repulsive forces.…”

“…Liposomes are synthetically prepared, spherical, self-enclosed microscopic entities with membrane bilayer-like structures 2 . They are formed by exposing the lipid headgroups to a strongly aqueous environment 3 . Use of such systems for different modes of administration is advantageous because of their biocompatibility and biodegradability.…”
