Six New Triterpenoid Saponins from the Root and Stem Bark ofCephalanthus occidentalis

Abstract: From the root and stem bark of Cephalanthus occidentalis L., a common American wetland species, six new triterpenoid saponins (1 - 6), together with 29 known compounds were isolated and identified. On the basis of spectroscopic analysis and chemical degradation, the structures of new compounds were elucidated as 3-O-beta-glucopyranosylcincholic acid (1), cincholic acid 28-O-beta-glucopyranosyl ester (2), 3-O-beta-glucopyranosyl-(1-->4)-beta-fucopyranosylcincholic acid (3), 3-O-beta-glucopyranosyl-(1-->4)-beta-… Show more

“…Known compounds 14-18, 30, and 31 were obtained from fraction Aes-I, and identified by NMR and MS analysis as aesculiolisides Ia-Ie (14-18) , scopolin (30) (Zhang et al, 2005), and 5-methoxy- (Wagner and Bladt, 1975). While known compounds 23-29 were obtained from fraction Aes-IV and identified by NMR and MS analysis as aesculiolisides , 3-O-[b-D-galactopyranosyl (1 !…”

“…Analytical HPLC was performed on an Agilent 1100 system equipped with an Agilent Eclipse XDB-C18 column (4.6 150 mm, 5 mm, column B). Octadecylfunctionalized silica gel, silica gel, and TLC, and other detailed separation procedures are described elsewhere [11], [12].…”

“…However, there are only two phytochemical reports on C. texanus: one about the content of histamine, acetylcholine, and serotonin in its trichomes [9] and an early short note [10]. Our continuing research on the search for bioactive compounds from native North American plants prompted us to investigate this native but invasive species in Texas [11], [12]. Herein, we report the results of our phytochemical investigation of C. texanus.…”

“…species, 35 alkaloids and triterpenoid glycosides have been isolated, including six new triterpenoid glycosides (Fig. 6) [120]. Red buckeye (Aesculus pavia) is a shrubby or small tree species commonly distributed in the southeastern U.S. From one untreated plant grown on the Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA) campus, we have isolated 14 oleanane-type triterpenoid glycosides including 12 new compounds [118].…”

“…Decapitation pruning can also significantly induce biosynthesis of some alkaloids and triterpenoid glycosides that are not detected or occur at too low a level to be isolated in untreated plants [118][119][120][121]. Camptotheca acuminata is one of the most extensively studied species.…”
