Replacing organic liquid electrolyte with inorganic solid electrolytes (SE) can potentially address the inherent safety problems in conventional rechargeable batteries. However, solid-state batteries (SSBs) have been plagued by the relatively low ionic conductivity of SEs and large charge-transfer resistance between electrode and SE. Here, a new design strategy is reported for improving the ionic conductivity of SE by self-forming a composite material. An optimized Na + ion conducting composite electrolyte derived from the Na 1+n Zr 2 Si n P 3−n O 12 NASICON (Na Super Ionic Conductor) structure is successfully synthesized, yielding ultrahigh ionic conductivity of 3.4 mS cm −1 at 25 °C and 14 mS cm −1 at 80 °C. On the other hand, in order to enhance the charge-transfer rate at the electrode/electrolyte interface, an interface modification strategy is demonstrated by utilization of a small amount of nonflammable and nonvolatile ionic liquid (IL) at the cathode side in SSBs. The IL acts as a wetting agent, enabling a favorable interface kinetic in SSBs. The Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 /IL/SE/Na SSB exhibits excellent cycle performance and rate capability. A specific capacity of ≈90 mA h g −1 is maintained after 10 000 cycles without capacity decay under 10 C rate at room temperature. This provides a new perspective to design fast ion conductors and fabricate long life SSBs.

A solvent-free ceramic/polymer composite solid electrolyte has been proposed and demonstrated well in solid-state Na batteries for the first time.

Two cyclodepsipeptides and a known cyclodepsipeptide valinomycin were isolated from a culture of the marine actinomycete Streptomyces sp. P11-23B. Their structures were established based on NMR, HRESIMS, and MS-MS spectroscopic interpretation as well as by chemical degradation. Both streptodepsipeptides P11A and P11B inhibited proliferation of different glioma cell lines, with IC values ranging from 0.1 μM to 1.4 μM. Streptodepsipeptide P11A was found to block the cell cycle at the G/G phase and induce apoptosis in glioma cells. Further investigation demonstrated that streptodepsipeptide P11A downregulated expression of HK2, PFKFB3, PKM2, GLS, and FASN, important tumor metabolic enzymes. Data from this study suggested that targeting multiple tumor metabolic regulators might be one anti-glioma mechanism of streptodepsipeptide P11A. A possible mechanism for this class of streptodepsipeptides is reported herein.

Assay-guided fractionation of the ethanol extract of Tovomita krukovii resulted in the identification of four new xanthones (1 - 4) and ten known compounds (5 - 14). The structures of compounds 1 - 14 were determined by spectral data to be 3,5-dihydroxy-4-methoxyxanthone (1), 1,3,5,7-tetrahydroxy-8-isoprenylxanthone (2), 1,3,5-trihydroxy-8-isoprenylxanthone (3), 1,5,7-trihydroxy-8-isoprenylxanthone (4), 1,3,7-trihydroxy-2-isoprenylxanthone (5), 1,5-dihydroxyxanthone (6), 1,6-dihydroxy-5-methoxyxanthone (7), 1,3,5-trihydroxyxanthone (8), 1,3,6-trihydroxy-5-methoxyxanthone (9), 1,6-dihydroxy-3,5-dimethoxyxanthone (10), 1,3,7-trihydroxyxanthone (11), 3-geranyl-2,4,6-trihydroxybenzophenone (12), betulinic acid (13), and 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid (14). Compounds 2, 3, 12 and 13 showed inhibitory effects against Candida albicans secreted aspartic proteases (SAP) with IC50 values of 15 microg/ml, 25 microg/ml, 40 microg/ml, and 6.5 microg/ml, respectively, while the other compounds were inactive. In addition, compound 12 showed activity against C. albicans, C. neoformans, S. aureus and methicillin resistant S. aureus (MRS).

Camptotheca (Nyssaceae) is a major source of anticancer camptothecin (CPT). It is imperative to understand CPT accumulation and variations in Camptotheca in order to develop CPT production strategies for endangered germplasm. Our study results showed that CPT is primarily accumulated in glandular trichomes of leaves and stems, and CPT content varies among species and varieties but even more significantly within the plant (with different tissues, tissue ages, and seasons). Because of higher CPT yield and desirable biological and ecological features, 'Hicksii' and 'Katie' should be considered the major management germplasm as CPT sources in the future. Young leaves and mature fruits have higher CPT contents than other tissues in the plants. Young photosynthetic leaves and stems contain higher CPT contents than old ones, but 'sink' tissues such as wood, roots, and fruits show different patterns. CPT content also shows a great seasonal change, but is less influenced by tree age. Intact clipping of young leaves and stems should be managed for harvest for CPT production. Preservation and treatment methods influence the CPT extraction. CPT is better preserved in fresh or freeze-dried material than in air or oven-dried material. CPT can be more efficiently extracted after homogenizer treatment of plant materials because more trichome walls can be broken to allow solvent extraction.

As demands for electrochemical energy storage continue to rise, alternative electrochemistries to conventional Li‐ion batteries become more appealing. Here, an intercalation‐conversion hybrid cathode that combines intercalation‐type VS2 with conversion‐type sulfur chemistry to construct high performance solid‐state lithium‐sulfur batteries is reported. The layered VS2 nanomaterial features Li‐ion transport channels, metallic conductivity, and active capacity contribution, all of which provide an ideal platform for the solid state S/Li2S redox couple to unlock its high gravimetric capacity. The S/VS2/Li3PS4 hybrid cathode composite is prepared by a facile, low‐cost, and low‐energy mechanical blending process. The S/VS2/Li3PS4|Li3PS4|Li/In (or Li) all‐solid‐state cell exhibits sulfur utilization of ≈85%, with a Coulombic efficiency of close to 100%. High areal capacity up to 7.8 mA h cm−2 with an active material loading (S/VS2) as high as 15.5 mg cm−2 is achieved.

Capoamycin-type antibiotics (2–5) and polyene acids (6, 7) were isolated from marine Streptomyces fradiae strain PTZ0025. Their structures were established by extensive nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and high resolution electron spray ionization mass spectroscopy (HRESIMS) analyses and chemical degradation. Compounds 3, 4, 6, 7 were found to be new and named as fradimycins A (3) and B (4), and fradic acids A (6) and B (7). Compounds 3–5 showed in vitro antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus with a minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 2.0 to 6.0 μg/mL. Interestingly, Compounds 3–5 also significantly inhibited cell growth of colon cancer and glioma with IC50 values ranging from 0.13 to 6.46 μM. Fradimycin B (4), the most active compound, was further determined to arrest cell cycle and induce apoptosis in tumor cells. The results indicated that fradimycin B (4) arrested the cell cycle at the G0/G1 phase and induced apoptosis and necrosis in colon cancer and glioma cells. Taken together, the results demonstrated that the marine natural products 3–5, particularly fradimycin B (4), possessed potent antimicrobial and antitumor activities.
