Six Degrees of Freedom Mobile Inductive Power Transfer by Crossed Dipole Tx and Rx Coils

Abstract: Abstract─ Crossed dipole coils for the wide-range 3-D omnidirectional inductive power transfer (IPT) are proposed. Free positioning of a plane receiving (Rx) coil is obtained for an arbitrary direction within 1m from a plane transmission (Tx) coil. Both the Tx and Rx coils consist of crossed dipole coils with an orthogonal phase difference; hence, a rotating magnetic field is generated from the Tx, which enables the Rx to receive power vertically or horizontally. Thus, the 3-D omnidirectional IPT is first real… Show more

“…However, such a charging system is sensitive to misalignment between the charger and the device, which leads to bad user experiences. Hence, some free-positioning and omnidirectional wireless charging systems and related control methods have been proposed [4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11]. On the basis of the spherical two-or three-dimensional Tx coil, some control methods, such as current vector control, nonidentical current control, and current amplitude control, were proposed to achieve omnidirectional WPT [4][5][6].…”

“…The size of the Tx coil in the work of [9] was also large and would lead to the space assumption in the working area. On the basis of the crossed bipolar Tx and Rx coils, six degrees of freedom mobile inductive power transfer were achieved [10]. However, the complex structure and large size of Rx coils make it difficult for them to be integrated into portable consumer devices.…”

“…The results presented in that paper are the optimization of the magnetic coupling and, consequently, the improvement of the detection ability of the system. To improve the efficiency of the physical link in the above-described case and for misaligned TX-RX [9][10][11][12][13], several possibilities can be combined:…”

“…To cope omnidirectional wireless powering, several inductive link configurations have been proposed [20]–[27]. In [20] and [21], PTE of the inductive link is maximized by locating the Tx coil, either electronically or mechanically, in the best position to power the Rx coil.…”

“…Another method has been proposed in [24] for omnidirectional powering with triple orthogonal Rx coils and a single Tx coil, which is suitable for an enclosed capsule, but the Rx coils block access to the electronics inside the headstage, making it difficult to repair or to have electrode feed-through. In [25]–[27], multiple Tx coils are combined to achieve omnidirectional powering in a 3D space. However, instead of driving only one coil in the proposed EnerCage-HC2 system, a complex control circuit with phase-, time-, and/or frequency-domain modulation is needed to control the Tx coils.…”
