Crop management is necessary in sprouting, cycle and productivity of most plants of commercial interest. However, recommendations and information are scarce for yacon cultivation, mainly regarding the possible interferences of planting method and depth in the crop development and production. Therefore, the objective was to study the influence of the planting methods and depths on yacon tuberous roots development and production in high altitude conditions. The experiment was a randomized complete block design, with four replications, in a subdivided plots scheme. The plots consisted of three planting methods (groove, pit and ridge) and subplots characterized by four planting depths (5, 10, 15, and 20 cm). Evaluations were carried out from the sprouting process of the rhizophores to the yield of tuberous roots. The planting methods in a pit and ridge had lower seedling mortality rates (27.5 and 20.2% lowers than grooves) and higher yields of tuberous roots (31.2 and 21.4% higher than grooves). The planting depths of 5 and 10 cm of the rhizophores were shown to be the most suitable for yacon cultivation for the three planting methods.

El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar el tamaño óptimo de parcela experimental y número de repeticiones para evaluar el rendimiento en el cultivo de boniato, cultivado con mulch de plástico negro y en suelo descubierto. Se realizaron de manera simultánea dos ensayos de uniformidad, con cobertura plástica (mulch) y en suelo descubierto, ambos en secano. La densidad de plantación fue de 2,5 planta m-2. Se establecieron dos parcelas de 120 plantas, y cada planta fue definida como una unidad básica. La variedad de boniato utilizada fue «RBS Cuia». El tamaño de parcela se determinó utilizando el método de máxima curvatura modificada y el modelo lineal segmentado con respuesta plateau. El número de repeticiones se calculó con base en la diferencia mínima significativa del test de Tukey (p = 0,05). Los valores promedio del rendimiento con mulch y en suelo descubierto fueron de 1,07 y 0,50 kg planta-1, respectivamente. El coeficiente de variación mostró mayor dispersión en condiciones de suelo descubierto. Entre ambos métodos utilizados para determinar el tamaño de parcela se encontró una diferencia de 2,0 y de 1,6 unidades básicas con mulch y en suelo descubierto, respectivamente. El tamaño óptimo de parcela experimental en condición con mulch y en suelo descubierto fue 12,5 m2 y 32,5 m2, respectivamente. El número de repeticiones para determinar 50 % de diferencia mínima significativa en condiciones con mulch y en suelo descubierto fue de 9 y 12 repeticiones, respectivamente, hasta 30 tratamientos.

This study aimed to evaluate sweet potato performance in succession to annual herbaceous leguminous plants, in monocropping or intercropped with corn, under agroecological management, under Baixada Fluminense conditions. The experimental design was randomized blocks, with five treatments and four replicates. The treatments consisted of pre-cropping with the following species: crotalária (Crotalaria juncea) under monocropping system, crotalária intercropped with corn (Zea mays), jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis) under monocropping system, jack bean intercropped with corn and spontaneous vegetation. The results showed that monocropped crotalária reached the greatest dry biomass accumulation during two consecutive years of succession. In the second year, this treatment provided greater accumulated amounts of N, K and Mg in plant biomass. Growing sweet potatoes in succession to the pre-cropping of crotalária is advantageous, as it provided an increase in vegetable productivity in the second year of succession.
