“…This was in contrast to observations of Abubakar et al (2). In agreement with some reports (6,16,17), a positive phenotypic correlation between milk yield and lactation length was obtained.…”

“…In this study, actual records were used because information was inadequate for derivation of acceptable factors (24). Heritability estimated in this study was higher than estimates by McDowell et al (16) and Camoens et al (6) where negative sire components of variance were obtained with Mexico and Puerto Rico data. High estimates also have been obtained by others (2,17,20).…”

“…The estimated genetic correlation, rA =0.08 & 0.35, for milk yield (Table 3) seems to be the lowest estimate ever reported between local and exotic environments (Petersen, 1975;McDowell et al, 1976;Cunningham 8: O'Byme, 1977). It should be noted that the standard errors of the parameter estimates involving Sri Lanka data are rather high due to the small progeny group size Downloaded by [University of California Santa Barbara] at 09:30 14 June 2016 Geiiot~pe-enciroiiiie~it interactioiz iii milk proditctioti 37 1 and the limited number of sires.…”

“…Least squares means for lactation milk yield were 6897 kg and 6761 kg (P<0.05) for cows from Italy and those born in Turkey, respectively. Studies in Mexico (McDowell et al, 1976b), Jordan (Lafi et al, 1995), Egypt (Farghaly et al, 1997), and the Czech Republic (Stadnik and Louda, 1999) also showed that imported HolsteinFriesians produced more milk than local HolsteinFriesians. Milk yield for cows from Italy was lower than that for Holstein-Friesian cows in Italy in 1993, which was 7421 kg (ANAFI, 2002), but it was higher than that for Holsteins in Sicily, which was 5799 kg (Licitra et al, 1998), where the environmental conditions are more similar to those in the western part of the Aegean Region.…”
