Genetic Evaluation of Holsteins in Columbia

Abstract: Original data consisted of 31,777 records of progeny of 1442 sires for calvings between 1975 and 1983. Unadjusted means for milk yield (kg), days in milk, days dry, calving interval, days carried calf, and age at calving were 4281, 267, 88, 421, 145, and 36.6. Estimated total variance for first lactation milk yield by Henderson's method 3 was 1,385,436 kg 2 with sire and error variances accounting for 1.8 and 98.2%. Heritabilities for milk yield, lactation length, age at calving, and days carried calf were .0… Show more

“…AFC was negatively correlated with GP and positively with S/C, this findings is similar to the results of Moore et al (1990) and Abubakar et al (1986) who reported a negative phenotypic correlation between AFC and GP and between AFC and TMY. Whereas Barrada et al (1969) and El Barbary et al (1983) reported positive phenotypic correlation between AFC and TMY.…”

“…Positive correlation with LL was also reported by Mohiuddin et al (1992), positive correlation with S/C was agreed with Vij and Tiwana (1986) who were also reported negative phenotypic correlation with GP and TMY. LL was negatively correlated with GP; this was disagreed with the findings of Abubakar et al (1986).…”

“…However, for AFC, Seykora and McDaniel (1983) stated that selection for milk yield resulted in a favorable reduction in AFC in heifers, in agreement with the reports by McDaniel and El-Sayed (1980), and Hansen et al (1983a, 1983b. Abubakar et al (1986) and Pearson de Vaccaro (1974) reported that Holstein cattle were older at first calving in South America than in other countries, and suggested nutritional differences as a main cause.…”

“…The LL was calculated as 314.3 days in this study. While this value was higher than the value reported by some researchers (Abubakar et al, 1986;Catillo et al, 1995;Sehar ve Özbeyaz, 2005;Özçelik ve Arpacık, 2000), it was lower than that reproted by some other researchers (Akkaş, 2008;Çerçi, 2006;Haile-Mariam et al, 2003;Koçak et al, 2007;Parlak ve Kandır, 2015;Ojango and Pollot, 2002) and was similar to that calculated by some others (Bayrıl and Yılmaz, 2017;Doğan M, Kaygısız, 1999). This value appears to be about 9 days longer than the 305 day period, which is considered as the standard lactation time.…”
