The Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC) was established by the Conference of Parties in 2002 to decrease the loss of plant diversity, reduce poverty and contribute to sustainable development. To achieve this overarching goal, the GSPC has established a series of targets, one of which is to ensure that plant diversity is well understood, so that it can be effectively conserved and used in a sustainable manner. Brazil hosts more than 46,000 species of plants, algae and fungi, representing one of the most biodiverse countries on Earth, and playing a key role in the GSPC. To meet the GSPC goals of Target 1 and facilitate access to plant diversity, Brazil committed to preparing the List of Species of the Brazilian Flora (2008-2015) and the Brazilian Flora 2020 (2016-present). Managing all the information associated with such great biodiversity has proven to be an extremely challenging task. Here, we synthesize the history of these projects, focusing on the multidisciplinary and collaborative approach adopted to develop and manage the inclusion of all the knowledge generated though digital information systems. We further describe the methods used, challenges faced, and strategies adopted, as well as summarize advances to date and prospects for completing the Brazilian flora in 2020.

The Atlantic Forest is a phytogeographic domain with a high rate of endemism and large species diversity. The Sapotaceae is a botanical family for which species identification in the Atlantic Forest is difficult. An approach that facilitates species identification in the Sapotaceae is urgently needed because this family includes threatened species and valuable timber species. In this context, DNA barcoding could provide an important tool for identifying species in the Atlantic Forest. In this work, we evaluated four plant barcode markers (matK, rbcL, trnH-psbA and the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer region - ITS) in 80 samples from 26 species of Sapotaceae that occur in the Atlantic Forest. ITS yielded the highest average interspecific distance (0.122), followed by trnH-psbA (0.019), matK (0.008) and rbcL (0.002). For species discrimination, ITS provided the best results, followed by matK, trnH-psbA and rbcL. Furthermore, the combined analysis of two, three or four markers did not result in higher rates of discrimination than obtained with ITS alone. These results indicate that the ITS region is the best option for molecular identification of Sapotaceae species from the Atlantic Forest.

A vegetação lenhosa de cerrado sentido restrito foi estudada no Centro de Visitação do JardimBotânico de Brasília-DF, área protegida do fogo por mais de 20 anos. Foram amostradas 10 parcelas de 20 x 50 m onde todos os indivíduos lenhosos com diâmetro da base, medido a 30 cm do solo, ≥ 5 cm foram mensurados. Foram amostradas 68 espécies, 48 gêneros e 32 famílias. Os valores de diversidade foram H’=3,44 e J’=0,81. A densidade total foi 2.041 ind.ha-1 e a área basal total 14,37 m2.ha-1, valores acima da faixa de variação no cerrado amostrado sobre vários tipos de solos no Brasil Central. Acredita-se que ausência do fogo na área de estudo desde 1985 possa ter contribuído para os altos valores de densidade e área basalencontrados. A análise de similaridade entre o cerrado estudado e áreas adjacentes, não protegidas do fogo, mostrou alta similaridade na composição de espécies e diferenciação estrutural entre as áreas.
