Hofer 's results have been confirmed and extended repeatedly with many different species, including elasmobranchs (Parker, 1909 ;Dotterweich, 1932), bony fishes (Wunder, 1927; Dijkgraaf, 1934; Hahn, 1960) and amphibians (Scharrer, 1932; Kramer, 1933; Dijkgraaf, 1947). In all cases reactions of blinded animals to weak water currents impinging locally on the body or to the near approach of moving objects were observed; in some instances even perception of motionless obstacles at a small distance was seen.…”
