The purpose of this research is to examine the participating students’ argumentation-based academic writing processes and the contributions of these processes to the students’ academic writing skills. The participants of the study, which was conducted through mixed method research design, were a group of 53 pre-service Turkish Teachers who are in their first year of Turkish education program at a state university in Turkey during the 2020–2021 academic year. In this research, the data were obtained through student products, rubrics, reflective participant diaries, and a semi-structured interview form. SPSS 23 was used in the analysis of the quantitative data, and NVivo 12 programs were used in the analysis of qualitative data. When the results of the analyses are considered in general, it can be deduced that academic writing practices based on argumentation contributed to the development of students in the dimensions of “subject and content,” “organization,” “language use,” “citation,” and “writing process.” In the data obtained from the reflective diaries and interviews, although some difficulties were pointed out, the statements of the students regarding their development came to the fore. In addition, it was pointed out that argumentation contributes not only to students’ academic writing skills, but also their development of thinking, objectivity, research motivation, and critical thinking.

Argumentation can be defined as a process in which claim, data, justification and supports, which are considered the basic building blocks of an argument, are connected together in a meaningful way. Especially in Science Education, argumentation method is known to have positive contributions to the learning-teaching processes. Today, there is much opportunity to integrate digital tools or software in argumentation processes for better learning outcomes. The literature points out the difficulties experienced by teachers and learners in the argumentation processes and emphasizes that digital tools or software can offer solutions to these problems. In this context, a wide variety of software is used to support argumentation processes in education more effectively and easily. The aim of this study is to examine existing argumentation software and to determine the features of a new "E-Argumentation" software, which is supposed to be a better and contemporary solution for argumentation processes, based on a needs analysis. Existing argumentation software is not rich in terms of multimedia usage and not compatible with group work, which is important in argumentation processes, or with three argumentation approaches in the literature. Furthermore, existing software has serious shortcomings in terms of usability and educational value. As a result, it is clear that there is a need for argumentation software which is compatible with current technologies, pedagogically useful, and has high level of usability and accessibility.

Argümantasyon, öğrencilerin ön bilgilerinden yararlanarak ortaya koydukları görüşleri destekleyen nedenleri anlaşılır bir şekilde dile getirdikleri, düşüncelerinin doğruluğunu desteklemek için karşıt kanıtlar sundukları ve çürütmeler yaptıkları diyaloglar bütünüdür. Etkili fen öğretimi için sınıflarda öğrencilerin güçlü argümanlar üretmeleri, fikirlerini savunabilecek verileri gerekçe veya karşıt argümanlarla çürütme kullanmaları gerekmektedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, ortaokul 7. sınıf fen bilimleri dersi Kuvvet ve Enerji ünitesinde yer alan iş ve enerji konusunda yapılan argümantasyona dayalı öğretimin öğrencilerin argümantasyon seviyelerine etkisini belirlemektir. Çalışmada nicel araştırma yaklaşımlardan tek gruplu zayıf deneysel desen kullanılmıştır. Bu araştırmanın çalışma grubunu Çorum ilinin merkez ilçesine bağlı bir köyde öğrenimlerine devam eden 7. sınıftaki 11 ortaokul öğrencisi oluşturmaktadır. Belirtilen öğrencilere araştırmacılar tarafından geliştirilen sekiz argumantasyon etkinliği ile dört hafta öğretim yapılmıştır. Sonrasında öğrencilere uygulanan çalışma yapraklarının betimsel analizi yapılmıştır. Verilerin analizinde Aktamış ve Hiğde (2017) ve Sadler ve Fowler (2006) tarafından geliştirilen rubriklerden yararlanılarak hazırlanan argumantasyon seviye belirleme rubriği kullanılmıştır. Yapılan değerlendirmeler sonucunda öğrencilerin argümantasyon seviyelerinin bir kısmında artış görülmüştür. Bir öğrencinin sadece bir etkinlikte çürütme kullandığı, diğerlerinin ise veri, iddia, gerekçe ve akıl yürütme ögelerini kullanabildikleri belirlenmiştir. Öğrencilerin çoğunlukla ikinci seviyeye kadar çıkabildiği, sadece bir öğrencinin bir etkinlikte üçüncü seviyeye ulaşabildiği, hiçbir öğrencinin ise tüm etkinlikler boyunca dördüncü seviyeye çıkamadığı tespit edilmiştir. Öğretmenler argümantasyon uygulamalarını sınıflarında ne kadar çok uygularsa öğrencilerin argümanlarını yapılandırmaları ve anlamlı öğrenmeleri daha çok desteklenebilir.
