Imaging using dipole acoustic logging reflections has become a research topic of increasing interest in recent years. Extracting reflections from the whole waveform is both important and extremely difficult because the reflections are obscured by large‐amplitude direct waves. A method of wavefield separation based on high‐resolution Radon transforms has been applied to separate the reflected waves. First, an analysis of the common offset gathers shows that the linear Radon transform can be used to separate the direct and reflected wave fields. However, traditional linear Radon transforms cannot focus the wave event using the least squares method. An improved high‐resolution linear Radon transform is achieved using the principles of maximum entropy and Bayesian methods based on previous studies. The separation method is tested using synthetic data for hard and soft formations, a void model, and a fault model. The high‐resolution Radon transform method is used to process a field dataset and exhibits improved results compared with those of the standard method.

A B S T R A C TRecent studies have revealed the great potential of acoustic reflection logging in detecting near borehole fractures and vugs. The new design of acoustic reflection imaging tool with a closest spacing of 10.6m and a certain degree of phase steering makes it easier to extract the reflection signals from the borehole mode waves. For field applications of the tool, we had developed the corresponding processing software: Acoustic Reflection Imaging. In this paper, we have further developed an effective data processing flow by employing multi-scale slowness-time-coherence for reflection wave extraction and incorporating reverse time migration for imaging complicated subtle structures with the strong effects of borehole environment. Applications of the processing flow to synthetic data of acoustic reflection logging in a fractured formation model and interface model with fluid filled borehole generated by 2D finite difference method, and to the physical modelling data from a laboratory water tank, as well as to the field data from two wells in a western Chinese oil field, demonstrate the validity and capability of our multi-scale slowness-time-coherence and reverse time migration algorithms.

The single‐well imaging using reflected wave field has become an important well logging technology to detect formation geologic structures outside a borehole. For this application, various types of sources are used, including monopole, dipole and quadrupole sources. Using the concept of acoustic energy flow density, we propose a method to evaluate the radiation property and efficiency of a borehole source by comparing the energy flow of guided waves along borehole to that of radiated waves away from borehole. Using this method, we study the frequency variation characteristics of the energy flow and radiation efficiency for a multipole source in a fluid‐filled borehole. Our results demonstrate that the radiation efficiency and dominant frequency of monopole, dipole and quadrupole sources are all different. The radiation efficiency of monopole is very low in the frequency range below 5 kHz, because the Stoneley wave carries almost all the energy away along borehole. In contrast, the dipole radiation efficiency is much greater than the monopole source in the low‐frequency range. This result explains why the dipole source is a better low‐frequency source than the monopole.
