Single-tuned Passive Harmonic Filter Design Considering Variances of Tuning and Quality Factor

Abstract: -This paper presents how to select tuning factor and quality factor in designing of a single-tuned passive harmonic filter. Tuning factor and quality factor must be considered before a decision of filter parameters(R, L and C). In literature, the study about these two factors has not been performed and only empirical values have been used in the passive harmonic filter design so far. As an empirical value, in cases of 5th and 7th filter, tuning order has been used 4.8 th and 6.8 th respectively and quality fac… Show more

“…Generally, the capacitor C S is determined for a known reactive power compensation required to improve the initial power factor to a desired initial power factor value in the power system. In particular, the required value of the capacitor can be calculated from Equation (2) at a specific harmonic order, at which the filter shall resonate [10], [15].…”

“…In most cases, the value of q varies between 20 and 100. When q is high, the filter will give the best harmonics attenuation but with higher filter cost [10], [15].…”

“…There are many papers that utilized passive filters to mitigate harmonics in power systems using filter devices [10][11][12], and the most common ones are single-tuned filters. Single-tuned filters are designed to eliminate or reduce single frequency from the system depending on the design resistance, capacitance, and inductance value [13]. This paper proposes a strategy when large-scale fast CS (FCS) are adopted in a 33-bus radial distribution system.…”
