Single-step shaping of the orbital angular momentum spectrum of light

Abstract: Control of orbital angular momentum (OAM) in optical fields has seen tremendous growth of late, with a myriad of tools existing for their creation and detection. What has been lacking is the ability to arbitrarily modify the OAM spectrum of a superposition in amplitude and phase, especially if a priori knowledge of the initial OAM spectrum is absent. Motivated by a quasi-mapping that exists between the position and OAM of Laguerre-Gaussian modes, we propose an approach for a singlestep modulation of a field's … Show more

“…Actually, instead of reconfiguring the attenuators, we can accomplish the same functionality by reconfiguring the phase pattern displayed at the SLM located on the light source side. Indeed, this alternative way is directly and dynamically utilizing the high-dimensional property of OAM 38 . This architecture, however, imposes a complex arbitration mechanism when we extend the principle to two-player situations in the following.…”

“…ANG where r and indicate the radius and azimuthal angle under polar coordinates in the transverse plane according to beam propagation direction, respectively. Thus, the only question is how to realize the required diagonal matrices in OAM-domain, which is also referred to as an OAM spectral shaper [34].…”

“…If the PV rings are structured such that the radius difference of adjacent rings, ΔR, satisfies ΔR2T, then the PVs are sufficiently separated from one another that the OAM modes they carry can be manipulated independently (but coherently) and in a single step. [ 31 ] This is key, since it grants the ability to apply the required unitary operations in Equations ( ) and () using conventional devices such as spatial light modulators (SLMs).…”
