Single-Layer Nanowire Polarizer Integrated With Photodetector and Its Application for Polarization Navigation

Abstract: We report a method of integrating the single layer nanowire polarizers with photodetectors, and the fabricated device is used as the polarization navigation sensor. The fabrication processes mainly base on nanoimprint lithography and dry etching. The fabrication method can fabricate nanogratings with multi-orientation simultaneously, so angular alignment error is eliminated. The external quantum efficiency of the integrated device is tested, and peak external quantum efficiency of 23% at around 440nm is achiev… Show more

“…Polarization (POL) is the unique property of light as a transverse electromagnetic wave, reflecting that the vibration direction of the optical wave electric vector does not have symmetry with the propagation direction of light. Polarization information is valued by people in the fields of navigation [2][3][4][5], medicine [6,7], and remote sensing [8][9][10]. Navigation technology plays an important role in people's daily lives, and it is indispensable for both daily travel and industrial transportation.…”

“…Compared with the traditional polarization detection methods, including division of time (DoT), division of amplitude (DoAm) and division of aperture (DoA), it has the advantages of compact structure, real-time imaging and high stability. With the development of micro-/nanoprocessing technology, the DoFP polarization detection technology has become a research hotspot [ 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 ].…”

“…To date, nanostructures are usually obtained by electron beam direct writing (EBDW), 14,15) focused ion beam (FIB), 16,17) femtosecond-laser direct writing (FsLDW), 18,19) and nanoimprint lithography (NIL). [20][21][22] Among these well-developed nanofabrication methods, EBDW is the most prominent technology because it can make original patterns with high resolution and flexibility in photomask manufacturing and basic research. In order to further form metallic nanostructures, this method involve several other processing steps, such as depositing metal layers and some lift-off or etching processes as well.…”

“…30) Meanwhile, some metals, such as aluminum and gold, cannot be directly transferred by this method because of the weaker bonding force between metal and polymer substrate. 29) Aluminum, 3,21,22) gold, 1,16) and silver 4,11) are widely used in metallic micro-nano devices. In this letter, aluminum is selected as the material for the transfer of metallic nanostructures and the fabrication of metal grating polarizer because of its better polarization characteristics than other metal materials.…”
