Single-gap superconductivity in Mo8Ga41

Abstract: In this paper, the potential existence of two-gap superconductivity in Mo8Ga41 is addressed in detail by means of thermodynamic and spectroscopic measurements. A combination of highly sensitive bulk and surface probes, specifically ac-calorimetry and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS), are utilized on the same piece of crystal and reveal the presence of only one intrinsic gap in the system featuring strong electron-phonon coupling. Minute traces of additional superconducting phases detected by STS and also … Show more

“…Here we present a supplementary study of this superconductor using local Hall probe magnetometry performed on the same piece of crystal as in our previous report [9]. We show that also the lower critical magnetic field might be affected by surface inhomogeneities of the sample and mimic the two-gap behavior.…”

“…This report clarified that Mo 8 Ga 41 is inherently a single-gap superconductor and supposed two-gap features are just a reflection of domains or slight inhomogeneities present along the dominant phase even in the seemingly perfect sample. It is a consequence of the existence of the phases which are structurally very close to Mo 8 Ga 41 [9].…”

“…Its superconducting T c = 9.7 K and upper critical field µ 0 H c2 = 8.36 T. 7 It has been pointed out that, like MgB 2 , Mo 8 Ga 41 is also on the verge of a structural instability, 8,9 exhibits strong-coupling two-gap BCS superconductivity and good flux pinning potential. [10][11][12][13][14][15] In light of the relatively high critical temperature and upper critical field, further studies of this material are highly desirable.…”

“…The existence of the low-lying phonon modes will also enhance the electron-phonon coupling. Mo 8 Ga 41 is a strong electronphonon coupling superconductor with T c of 9.8 K [19][20][21][22][23], as benchmarked by the normalized specific heat jump ∆c p /γT c and the gap-to-T c ratio 2∆/k B T c of 2.83 and 4.40, respectively [19,22], both larger than the BCS weak-coupling values [24,25]. Here, γ is the Sommerfeld coefficient.…”
