Single dose of secnidazole treatment against naturally occuring Giardia duodenalis infection in Sakiz lambs

Abstract: Objective. The purposes of this study were to determine whether secnidazole administered at a single dose of 10 mg/kg, orally, lessens or eliminates Giardia cyst shedding, and to validate the benefit of secnidazole treatment on clinical signs and faecal consistency in lambs naturally infected with Giardia duodenalis. Materials and methods. To this extent weaned 12 weeks of age lambs were selected and randomly assigned into two groups based on placebo (group C, n=7 untreated control group) or treatment (group S… Show more

“…Fecal material was mixed through fifteen mL of ZnSO 4 solution (33%) and strained onto centrifuge tubes. Afterwards sample was subjected to centrifuge at 880 x g for 5 minutes as described (20), and to those of similarly to what have been reported elsewhere (14). Following centrifugation, a limited portion of the fecal mixture was collected and emitted on a microscope slide containing Lugol iodine, which was covered by a slip.…”

“…The traditional anti-Giardial treatment in sheep includes the usage of fenbendazole (10,11), albendazole (12), secnidazol (13,14) and paromomycin (15) resulting in a clinical benefit in treated lambs. Contrarily fenbendazole and albendazole need to be adminestered in multiple doses, besides paramomycin is expensive.…”

“…There was a high (99.98%) and significant reduction (P<0.001) in cyst excretion in the secnidazol treatment group in contrast to the positive control group on day 10, after therapy, suggesting the latter drug a highly effective treatment option (Ural et al, 2014).…”

“…AntiGiardial therapy within secnidazole has been the subject of various research articles in humanbeing (Di Prisco et al, 2000;Escobedo et al, 2003;Almirall et al, 2011). Besides in line with the purpose of this study, the efficacy of secnidazol against Giardiasis in lambs ( Ural et al, 2014) and Balantidiasis in cattle (Tarrar et al, 2008;Bilal et al, 2009) Disinfection by use of a product containing quaternary ammonium was performed prior to trial, for elimination of probable existing environmental contamination.…”
