Single-Crystal Structure of a Covalent Organic Framework

Abstract: The crystal structure of a new covalent organic framework, termed COF-320, is determined by single-crystal 3D electron diffraction using the rotation electron diffraction (RED) method for data collection. The COF crystals are prepared by an imine condensation of tetra-(4-anilyl)methane and 4,4'-biphenyldialdehyde in 1,4-dioxane at 120 °C to produce a highly porous 9-fold interwoven diamond net. COF-320 exhibits permanent porosity with a Langmuir surface area of 2400 m(2)/g and a methane total uptake of 15.0 wt… Show more

“…The two subunits are not directly but indirectly connected in a rim-to-rim fashion by eight isopropanol (i-PrOH) molecules via 16 intermolecular hydrogen bonds. A similar capsule TEA + @ (26b) 2 (H 2 O) 8 was reported by Aoki and coworkers [46] (Fig. 3.7b) at the same time.…”

“…These materials showcase promising applications in the field of gas storage [2][3][4][5] , opto-electronics 6 , catalysis [7][8][9] and sensing 10 because of their crystalline and periodic structure with high surface area and thermal stability. COFs are usually synthesized as microcrystalline powders and their long-range growth is limited in the nano/micro domain due to the internal defects [11][12][13] .…”

“…The recently developed three-dimensional rotation electron diffraction (3D RED) technique has shown superior advantages for both phase identification and structure determination of unknown crystals of micro-and even nano-size [19][20][21][22][23]. The basic principle of RED is to collect 3D electron diffraction data by combining electron beam tilt and goniometer tilt in TEM [19,21].…”
