“…This study indicates that the majority of authors (33/40 RAIs) showed their novel contributions by presenting research gaps via the five types of research gap strategy. The result of this study confirms that presenting a research gap is claimed as a crucial step in establishing a niche (Lim, 2012;Moghaddasi & Graves, 2017;Shehzad;Swales, 1990Swales, , 2004. Meanwhile, in 7/40 RAIs in our corpus, the authors did not present research gaps to indicate their research niches.…”

“…The variation of multiple research gap strategies was applied cyclically in the ELT RAIs. It indicates that not only authors from mathematics used more than one strategy to indicate research gaps (Moghaddasi & Graves, 2017), but the ELT authors, in this study, also did the same, and on top of that, they used different research gap strategy types in an RAI. This finding corroborates the claim of Lim (2012) who suggests that a certain research gap strategy must be combined with the other types of research gap strategy to convince readers that a particular study is worth conducting.…”

“…Recently, some previous studies (e.g., Abdolmalaki et al, 2019; M. AFFANDI ARIANTO, ALI SAUKAH, YAZID BASTHOMI, ANIK NUNUK WULYANI Afshar et al, 2018;Farnia & Barati, 2017) have considered the 1990 version to be the model used to identify the moves and steps in RA introductions. Meanwhile, some others have considered both models when investigating authors' rhetorical elements in RA introductions (Abdi & Sadeghi, 2018;Lim, 2012;Loi, 2010;Moghaddasi & Graves, 2017;Rahman, Darus, & Amir, 2017;Rubio, 2011;Wang & Yang, 2015). However, although many studies have investigated authors' RAs, particularly the abstract and introduction sections, and their reports have been used as guidelines for non-native and novice authors, there is still a need for deeper analysis on how authors present their research gaps in both sections.…”

“…In light of the considerable variation across disciplines observed in previous research, instruction aimed at students entering different fields may also need to introduce some of the abstract concepts associated with genre analysis, which students can then use as they examine and reflect on rhetorical practices in their own field. When introducing research writing to homogeneous classes of students entering the same discipline, instruction and pedagogical materials should ideally be more closely tailored to the specific practices of the discipline (for an example, see the description of M2 in discrete mathematics in Moghaddasi & Graves, 2017).…”
