In this study, α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by microemulsion method. Synthesized NPs were characterized by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra, and UV-Visible techniques. According to TGA analysis, it has been observed that a complete formation of Fe2O3 at around 400 °C. According to SEM images, plate like structure formation was observed in α-Fe2O3 NPs with homogeneous dispersion. Approximately 13.1 nm particle size was calculated from the XRD data by using the Scherrer equation. Fe-O vibrations in octahedral and tetrahedral regions were obtained in the FTIR spectrum. According to UV-Vis spectrum, it was determined that NPs showed optical absorption feature at wavelength of around 420 nm. In addition, optical band gap of the α-Fe2O3 NPs was calculated 3.2 eV.

Good quality of water determines the healthy life of living beings on this earth. The cleanliness of water was interrupted by the pollutants emerging out of several human activities. Industrialization, urbanization, heavy population, and improper disposal of wastes are found to be the major reasons for the contamination of water. Globally, the inclusion of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and heavy metals released by manufacturing industries, pharmaceuticals, and petrochemical processes have created environmental issues. The toxic nature of these pollutants has led researchers, scientists, and industries to exhibit concern toward the complete eradication of them. In this scenario, the development of wastewater treatment methodologies at low cost and in an eco-friendly way had gained importance at the international level. Recently, bio-based technologies were considered for environmental remedies. Biofiltration-based works have shown a significant result for the removal of volatile organic compounds and heavy metals in the treatment of wastewater. This was done with several biological sources such as bacteria, fungi, algae, plants, yeasts, etc. The biofiltration technique is cost-effective, simple, biocompatible, sustainable, and eco-friendly compared to conventional techniques. This review article provides deep insight into biofiltration technologies engaged in the removal of volatile organic compounds and heavy metals in the wastewater treatment process.

Odor-chemicals from cooking source have cancer risk for family members and commercial kitchen workers. They are now enabling O 3 formation and beginning to enter the one of the main pollutants in life. The diffusion of odor-chemicals is due to scarce adsorbing materials in rang hoods, resulting in urgency of design and development of low-cost materials. Catalytic methods involving oxidation and incineration of odor-chemicals have been explored. Following basic research for catalysts have been focused on catalytic performance, process, activity sites, stability and storage capability. Herein, we calculated reaction process between Fe/Co-N/P/B-C catalysts and CH 4 using density functional theory method. The catalytic performance of nitrogen and phosphorus or boron dual-coordinated iron or cobalt atoms on carbon material was discussed. Total activation energy required for these catalysts was decreased relative to Pt/C. Based on the results of charge density and projected density-of-states, we found that strong Fe/Co 3d electron composition and electron transfer from N 2p/P 3p to Fe/Co 3d were highly dispersed on carbon material, activity sites formed at the surface of materials could efficiently migrate and storage CH 4 and enhance the catalytic capability and stability. The work presented herein highlights the importance of density functional theory method quantified synergetic effects on material properties and more importantly demonstrated the potential of active sites toward enhancing the storage capability and stability of materials for practical applications.
