Simultaneous Reconstruction of the Medial and Lateral Collateral Ligaments for Chronic Combined Ligament Injuries of the Ankle

Abstract: MCL insufficiency resulted from medial ankle instability and medial impingement lesions. Outcomes in the patients indicated that MCL reconstruction or resection of medial impingement lesions, performed in addition to LCL reconstruction, is effective for treating chronic combined MCL and LCL injuries of the ankle.

“…14 Lateral ankle ligament dysfunction leads to chronic overload of the deltoid ligament, subsequently causing deltoid ligament deficiency and chronic RAI. 2,15,38 The dysfunction of the deltoid ligament affects the articular cartilage damage of the talus. 14 Considering these aspects, deltoid ligament repair or reconstruction are recommended for chronic deltoid ligament insufficiency.…”

“…32,34 Recently, rotational ankle instability (RAI) has been the focus of studies because of its contribution to ankle OA development. 35,38 RAI is defined as an abnormal increase in talar rotation within the tibiofibular mortise via a combination of lateral ligament and deltoid ligament injuries. 5,35 Ankles with lateral ligament injury exhibit abnormal pronation and external rotation at heel strike and supination and internal rotation during the acceleration phase.…”
