Simultaneous Quantitation of Boric Acid and Calcium Fructoborate in Dietary Supplements by HPTLC-Densitometry

Abstract: The paper describes a new, simple, selective and precise high-performance thin-layer chromatographic (HPTLC) method for the simultaneous identification and quantitative determination of boric acid (BA) and calcium fructoborate (CFB) in bulk and tablet/capsule dosage forms of dietary supplements. HPTLC silica gel G 60 F254 precoated glass plates were used as the stationary phase. The mobile phase consisted of 2-propanol-water 8:2 (v/v). The two boron-based compounds were adequately separated with the Rf values … Show more

“…In order to prevent matrix interferences and/or to enhance sensitivity of a method some pretreatment procedures have been applied in most techniques before determination of boron. Most of the pretreatment procedures involve preconcentration and/or separation procedures such as solid phase extraction, liquid-liquid extraction, dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction, ion-exchange method and cloud-point extraction [17,24,42,43,59,[65][66][67][68][69].…”

“…Linear working range and LOD (S/N = 3) and reproducibility were found as 0.1 -50 ppm, 5 ppb and 5%, respectively. Bita et al [59] describe the simultaneous determination of boric acid (BA) and calcium fructoborate (CFB) in dietary supplements by a new high-performance thin-layer chromatographic (HPTLC) method. “…An aqueous 1 mg/mL stock solution of BA was prepared, while the concentration for the stock solution of CaFB was 5 mg/mL. The standard working solutions were obtained by diluting the stock solutions with water to achieve the concentration range of 0.2–0.6 μg/band for BA and 1–3 μg/band for CFB, respectively [ 18 ]. The samples were obtained by dissolving 20 mg of BA and CaFB hydrogels in 10 mL of water.…”

“…At regular time intervals, 0.5 mL of solution was taken and immediately replaced with an equal volume of PBS. The amount of released CaFb was determined by the high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) method [ 14 ]. To confirm that the compound truly was CaFb, we eluted one of the bands from the sample directly into the mass spectrometer and we obtained the expected mass spectrum [ 6 ].…”
