The presence of mycotoxins in herbal medicines is an established problem throughout the entire world. The sensitive and accurate analysis of mycotoxin in complicated matrices (e.g., herbs) typically involves challenging sample pretreatment procedures and an efficient detection instrument. However, although numerous reviews have been published regarding the occurrence of mycotoxins in herbal medicines, few of them provided a detailed summary of related analytical methods for mycotoxin determination. This review focuses on analytical techniques including sampling, extraction, cleanup, and detection for mycotoxin determination in herbal medicines established within the past ten years. Dedicated sections of this article address the significant developments in sample preparation, and highlight the importance of this procedure in the analytical technology. This review also summarizes conventional chromatographic techniques for mycotoxin qualification or quantitation, as well as recent studies regarding the development and application of screening assays such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, lateral flow immunoassays, aptamer-based lateral flow assays, and cytometric bead arrays. The present work provides a good insight regarding the advanced research that has been done and closes with an indication of future demand for the emerging technologies.

Rapid Determination of 17 Phthalate Esters in Capsanthin by QuEChERS Coupled with Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry

A method for simultaneous determination of 17 kinds of phthalate esters in capsanthin was developed by QuEChERS(quick, easy, cheap, effective, ruggedand safe) pretreatment method coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS). Capsanthin samples were extracted with acetonitrile, then sodium chloride and anhydrous magnesium sulfatewas added for salting out. And the extracting liquids were cleansed by florisil, then the supernatants were analyzed by GC-MS. The limits of detection(LOD) and limits of quantitation(LOQ) ranged from 0.2 to 0.5μg/g and 0.6 to 1.5μg/g, respectively. DMP, DEP, DAP, DIBP, DBP, BMPP, DPP, DHXP and DCHP in the range of 0.2-10μg/g, DMEP, DEEP, BBP, DBEP, DEHP, DPhP, DNOP and DNP in the range of 0.5-20μg/g and all had good linearity and the linear correlation coefficients (R 2) were more than 0.995. The average recoveries of 17 kinds of PAEs of the three levels were between 82.8% and 118.1%, and the relative standard deviations(RSDs) were between 0.12% and 7.3%. It is a simple,rapid,accurate and reliable method for rapid detection of PAEs in large quantities of natural plant extract samples.

Determination of aflatoxin M1 and B1 in milk and jujube by miniaturized solid‐phase extraction coupled with ultra high performance liquid chromatography and quadrupole time‐of‐flight tandem mass spectrometry

A miniaturized solid-phase method was proposed for the extraction of aflatoxin M1 and B1 from milk and jujube samples. Target analytes were identified by ultra high performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry in positive mode. The main factors that affected the extraction ability and sensitivity of the analytical method were evaluated in detail. In the optimal conditions, 30 mg of silica particles functionalized with octadecyltrimethoxysilane and methanol were used as sorbent and desorption solvent in miniaturized solid-phase extraction, respectively. The calibration curves for aflatoxin B1 and M1 showed good linearity (r > 0.9921) within linear ranges. The limit of detection (S/N = 3) were determined to be 0.049 and 0.023 μg/kg for aflatoxin M1 and B1, respectively. In addition, the good spiked recoveries were obtained ranging from 88.24 to 105.35%. The results demonstrated that the proposed method had significant advantages including simple, inexpensive, rapid, and accurate, which considered as a suitable method for the trace analysis of aflatoxins.
