Simultaneous nipple reconstruction in autologous breast reconstruction

Abstract: Background: Reconstruction of the nipple-areola complex is the final step in surgical restoration of the breast. Nipple-areola reconstruction was previously done after an interval of several months using variable techniques, often resulting in low projection and flattened breast mound over time. We present algorithm of simultaneous nipple reconstruction (SNR) that leaves adequate residual projection and naturally shaped breast mound. Methods: Forty patients underwent a skin-sparing mastectomy and nipple excisio… Show more

“…Fat injection may be considered; however, the engraftment rate varies depending on the patient, and multiple re-operations may be necessary if insufficient amounts of fat are injected [30][31][32]. Furthermore, when the nipple or breast skin is excised due to involvement of cancer cells, simultaneous nipple reconstruction can be performed, and breast skin defects can be adequately covered [33].…”

“…4 Nipple reconstruction plays a vital role in breast reconstructive surgery, 5 aiming to enhance body image and improve the quality of life for breast cancer patients. 6,7 Despite significant advancements in this field, procedures may be complicated by partial or total flap necrosis, local infection, wound dehiscence, or seroma. The long-term maintenance of nipple projection continues to be a challenge for surgeons, often resulting in patient dissatisfaction 8 and requiring additional surgical interventions.…”
