Simultaneous Nano-Texturing onto a CVD-Diamond Coated Piercing Punch with Femtosecond Laser Trimming

Abstract: In this study, a CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition)-diamond coated tungsten carbide cobalt (WC (Co)) punch was trimmed to adjust its surface roughness and to significantly reduce its edge curvature for fine piercing by femtosecond laser processing. Through this laser trimming, the surface quality of the diamond coating and the punch edge profile were improved to less than 0.5 μm at the maximum roughness and 2 μm in the edge width, respectively. In parallel with this improvement of surface quality, the side surfac… Show more

“…The diamond-coated WC (Co) punch with a diameter of 1.958 mm was prepared and trimmed by the femtosecond laser system. The same trimming conditions as defined in [ 15 ] were utilized in this processing. The diamond-coated WC (Co) punch edge radius was measured to be 2.75 μm.…”

“…Due to the optical interaction between the scattering beams on the rough surface and the incident beam, the laser-induced periodic surface structuring (LIPSS) takes place together with the trimming processes [ 14 , 15 ]. Nanotexturing to diamond films by LIPSS is made by using the nanoablation via the femtosecond laser irradiation [ 13 , 14 , 15 ]. Under the laser irradiation conditions in the above, the LIPSS period is estimated to be 250 nm [ 17 ].…”

“…The femtosecond laser micromachining is suitable to trimming and nanotexturing the CVD-diamond coated WC (Co) punches [29][30][31] for ultrafine piercing of metallic sheets [29][30][31][32]. Figure 2b depicts the standard setup for this laser trimming and nanotexturing.…”

“…A new printing system is necessary to duplicate the tailored micro-and nano-patterns onto the metallic sheets and plates and to fabricate the functionally decorated devices and parts. Femtosecond laser processing becomes a powerful tooling system to print the microtextures as well as the nanotextures onto any material substrates [14][15][16]. In particular, LIPSS (Laser Induced Periodic Surface Structuring) [17] forms various nanotextured morphologies on the work material 2 of 10 surface with different LIPSS-ripple periods in the function of laser beam capacity such as fluence and pulse width in addition to the work surface condition.…”
