Separators are essential for supplying ion transport channels and preventing short circuits. Despite considerable effort, high-performance separators with desirable overall properties such as excellent thermostability, wettability, and impressive properties for suppressing lithium dendrites and polysulfide intermediates remain elusive. Here, we present an aramid nanofiber (ANF) and metal–organic framework (MOF) composite separator (ANF@MOFs) utilizing in situ growth of MOFs onto the extremely porous ANF network substrate. Benefiting from the features of the excellent strength, modulus, and nanoporosity of the ANF network, as well as the enormous specific surface area and sufficient metal sites of MOFs, the resultant ANF@MOFs separator exhibits excellent mechanical strength (a tensile strength of 110.7 MPa and a modulus of 3.1 GPa), improved liquid electrolyte wettability (an electrolyte uptake of 258.3%), and exceptional thermal stability (dimensionally stable after heating at 200 °C for 0.5 h). The ANF@MOFs separator not only demonstrates promising capabilities for physically blocking and chemically adsorbing Li2S2/Li2S and hence suppressing the Li2S x shuttle effect but also suppresses the perforation of lithium dendrites, resulting in remarkable electrochemical and safety features. The battery equipped with the ANF@MOFs separator has a high first-cycle discharge capacity of 1081.92 mAh g–1 and a prolonged cycling performance with a capacity of 876.36 mAh g–1 at 0.5 C after 200 cycles. As a result, the high-performance ANF@MOFs composite separator provides significant potential for future lithium–sulfur batteries.

CO 2 -responsive polymers transform from hydrophobic to hydrophilic under a gas stimulus, which can be used to capture proteins under mild conditions; however, the selectivity is not high enough. In this work, Fe 3 O 4 enveloped with silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ) was prepared and grafted on poly(2-(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDEA) through the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) technique, yielding a CO 2 -responsive magnetic microsphere. The molecularly imprinted surface was then fabricated using poly(dopamine) (PDA) with bovine serum albumin (BSA) as a template, producing gas and magnetic dualresponsive microspheres with good selectivity, denoted as Fe 3 O 4 /SiO 2 / PDEA-MIP. Their chemical structure and CO 2 responsiveness were confirmed. Their adsorption capacity for BSA was 55 mg g −1 under the concentration of 0.8 mg mL −1 with good reversibility. The imprinting factor (IF) reached as high as 5.73 under optimized adsorption conditions, which further makes it specifically capture the target protein from a mixture and separate the protein under gas or magnetic control. The interaction between BSA with unprotonated and protonated PDEA was theoretically studied by quantum mechanics calculations, which prove its reversibility under the CO 2 stimulus. Furthermore, the circular dichroism (CD) spectra approved that the conformation of proteins remained unchanged under the CO 2 stimulus, indicating that it is a moderate separation technique for proteins. This work supplied a strategy to develop highly selective and switchable materials to realize protein recognition and separation under mild conditions.

Considering the serious barriers/issues induced by the accumulated starch generated in white water system of old corrugated cardboard (OCC) pulping process, large amounts of accumulated starch in white water would be decomposed by microorganisms and could not be utilized, thereby resulting in severe resource wastage and environmental pollution. This study mainly explored the effects of biodegradation/hydrolysis conditions of the two types of starch substrates (native starch and enzymatically (α-amylase) hydrolyzed starch), which were treated via microorganism degradation within the simulated white water from OCC pulping system and their biodegradation products on the key properties were characterized via X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) technologies.
