Simultaneous microscopic measurements of thermal and spectroscopic fields of a phase change material

Abstract: In this paper, simultaneous microscopic measurements of thermal and spectroscopic fields of a paraffin wax n-alkane phase change material are reported. Measurements collected using an original setup are presented and discussed with emphasis on the ability to perform simultaneous characterization of the system when the proposed imaging process is used. Finally, this work reveals that the infrared wavelength contains two sets of important information. Furthermore, this versatile and flexible technique is well ad… Show more

“…The instrument in our study (described in the “Experimental Setup” section) can correct for this effect. The system has shown to have a great advantage when taking simultaneous IR spectroscopic and thermal measurements on a dynamic system to study polymerisation in microfluidics and phase change of a material . Here, we want to show that it is advantageous for a static sample as well.…”

“…As a consequence, the spectrum in figure 3.a seems to have a very important thermal dependency w hereas they are mainly affected by the proper emission dependency. This illustrates the first interest of the tw o images technique [5][6] that is to have the possibility to subtract this thermal dependent baseline. Then, by making this subtraction, only the spectrum as function of temperature can be plotted in figure 3.b.…”

“…The infrared spectra w ere acquired using the synchronization of the monochromator and the IR camera by using a mechanical chopper w ith homemade LabVIEW softw are to control the acquisition frequency and to scan the w avelength over the domain of interest. As a consequence, w ith the set-up described in figure 1, and as already demonstrated in previous papers [5][6] the acquired signal is based on tw o images techniques w hich are function of several contributions as follow :…”

“…Recently, a novel system [14][15] developed by our team, that combined two imaging techniques enabled simultaneous measurements of IR spectroscopic and thermal imaging at multiscale of the time and space. The thermal and the spectroscopic images are alternatively recorded with the synchronized signal from a chopper that attains the high simultaneity in the measurement.…”

“…The thermal and the spectroscopic images are alternatively recorded with the synchronized signal from a chopper that attains the high simultaneity in the measurement. Previous measurement [15] performed in steady state demonstrates the ability of the set-up to record concentration and temperature fields simultaneously during phase change of n-Eicosane (C20H42) in steady state with a 5 ms time interval and with a spatial resolution of 4 m.…”
