Thiamphenicol and florfenicol are two phenicol antibiotics commonly used in aquaculture. Photodegradation experiments on these phenicols were performed in aqueous solutions under irradiation of different light sources. We found under UV-vis irradiation (lamda >200 nm) they photodegraded the fastest in seawater, followed by pure water and freshwater, whereas under solar or simulated sunlight (lamda >290 nm), they photodegraded in freshwater only. The effects of Cl- (the dominant seawater constituent), humic acids (HA, main constituents in freshwater) and other water constituents on the photodegradation of the antibiotics as a function of different light sources were studied so as to interpret the light-source-dependent effects of different waters. Under UV-vis irradiation, Cl- was found to promote singlet oxygen ((1)O2) formation and accelerated the photodegradation of phenicols, whereas the phenicols did not photolyze under simulated solar irradiation, irrespective of Cl-. In contrast, the presence of HA inhibited phenicol photolysis under UV-vis irradiation through competitive photoabsorption, but HA photosensitized degradation under simulated solar irradiation. Under UV-vis irradiation, the wavelength-averaged (200-290 nm) quantum yields for thiamphenicol and florfenicol in pure water were 0.022 +/- 0.001 and 0.029 +/- 0.001, respectively. Their solar photolytic half-lives in freshwater were 186 +/- 17 h and 99 +/- 16 h, respectively. UV-vis photodegradation intermediates were identified by HPLC-MS/MS, and degradation pathways were proposed. These involve photoinduced hydrolysis, dechlorination, self-sensitized photo-oxidation processvia (1)O2, and chlorination. These results are of importance toward the goal of assessing the persistence of phenicols in wastewater treatment and the environment.

The presence and accumulation of antibiotics in the water environment has become emerging contaminants of concern causing disruption of ecosystems worldwide. We describe here the seasonal variation and the occurrence of antibiotic residues in Fez city surface water (Morocco). During one year between February 2014 and January 2015, 8 surface water samples were collected monthly. Quantification of the 7 antibiotics was performed by on-line Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). A total of 96 surface water samples were investigated and the results revealed that 100% of the sites were contaminated by at least one antibiotic. Amoxicillin had the highest concentration with maximum concentration (4107 ng L 1), followed by ciprofloxacin (1058 ng L 1) and sulfamethoxazole was the most widely detected (93%). Seasonal variation showed that the concentration of antibiotics was higher in winter for trimethoprim (96 ng L 1), ciprofloxacin (438 ng L 1) and in summer for amoxicillin (1113 ng L 1), sulfamethoxazole (162 ng L 1) and erythromycin (47 ng L 1). The results from this research show that antibiotics are frequent contaminants in Fez city surface water. This is the first attempt to assess the occurrence of these 7 pharmaceutical residues in water samples in Fez Morocco.

A major concern in aquaculture is the use of chemical therapeutics, such as antibiotics, because of their impact on the environment as well as on the fish product. As a potential tool for reducing antibiotic use, we tested the application of low-frequency ultrasound as a method for enhancing antibiotic uptake. Rainbow trout juveniles (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were exposed to two different concentrations of oxytetracycline (OTC), flumequine (FLU) and florfenicol (FLO), administered by bath after the application of ultrasound. After exposure, concentrations of these substances were measured in the liver and blood of treated fish. Results showed that the ultrasound treatment can significantly increase the uptake for all three antibiotics. The uptake of OTC for example, in fish exposed to an OTC concentration of 20 mg L after prior treatment with ultrasound, was similar to the OTC concentrations in their liver and blood to fish exposed to 100 mg L without sonication. For FLU and FLO, the use of ultrasound caused significant differences of uptake in the liver at high antibiotic concentrations. This suggests that the use of ultrasound as a technique to deliver antibiotics to fish can ultimately reduce the amount of antibiotics discharged into the aquatic environment.
