Simultaneous determination of phthalate plasticizers in PVC packaging materials using homogeneous-ultrasonic extraction-GC-MS assisted with continuous wavelet transform

Abstract: Plasticizers in PVC plastic films were extracted by homogeneous-ultrasonics using n-hexane, the extracted multiple phthalate plasticizers (PAEs) were simultaneously determined by GC-MS assisted with continuous wavelet transform (CWT), and then a novel method for simultaneous determination of multiple plasticizers in PVC packaging materials was established. While using the traditional GC-MS analysis to determine nine plasticizers in PVC packaging materials, the total ion current (TIC) chromatogram of diisononyl… Show more

“…[ 165 ] As the most common phthalate plasticizers are a threat to human health, this has increased calls for the exclusion of PVC from packaging polymers and many other applications. [ 165,168–170 ] Phthalate plasticizer concentration increases with each recycling cycle, exacerbating these issues, [ 170 ] especially as phthalates migrate to external surfaces during thermal aging, reducing its efficiency and increasing environmental exposure over time. “…Consequently, it is necessary to establish a rapid and convenient method for the determination of phthalate esters in alcoholic beverages. The most widely used techniques for the determination of phthalate esters in food are gas chromatography and liquid chromatography coupled with various detectors (Wolfgang et al 2012;Chen et al 2012;Dong et al 2013;Yan, Cheng, and Yan 2012;Yan et al 2010;Randy and Wu 2012;Yao et al 2008;Jiao et al 2012). Although gas chromatography-mass spectrometry offered higher sensitivity for the determination of phthalate esters than liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, the liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry approach offered some advantages, such as superior selectivity with molecular weight information in isomeric mixtures, more reliable quantification of isomeric mixtures of phthalate esters, simpler cleanup procedures, and faster analysis.…”

“…Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), thermoplastic urethane (TPU), styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS), and acrylic coatings are widely used in consumer products. Researchers have used several pretreatment methods for residue detection in different materials, such as microwave digestion [38], Soxhlet extraction [33,39,40], ultrasonic extraction [41][42][43], and ultrasonic-assisted solution matrix precipitation (USDP) [44]. Huang Lina et al [33] detected phthalates in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic toys using Soxhlet extraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.…”
